Organizing...A Feel-Good Activity
What sort of things make you feel good? Time with friends is usually high on
everyone's list. For some, exercise brings on feelings of well being. Gardening
is another mood lifter for a lot of people. And many of us would include
organizing as a feel-good activity.
Some people might be surprised to hear organizing considered a feel-good
pursuit, but for many of us, it surely is. Creating order from chaos is a mood
lifter.
I like bringing order to a messy drawer or an overstuffed closet. Digging
through a drawer to find something feels like wasting time. If I want something,
for example, a particular pen or an empty flash drive, I like to know precisely
where to look and find it easily. Other family members like being able to find
things too.
Organizing brings a feeling of accomplishment. I know more than one person who
takes before and after pictures when they start an organizing project.
Organizing is one of those undertakings where you can usually see the
improvement. Other people are often appreciative of your efforts as well,
especially if it is a job they did not want to do.
Putting things in order can be seen as a way of caring for others. I do most of
the filing in our family. I like knowing that if something happened to me and my
family needed specific papers, they would be easy to locate. File folders are
labeled and arranged by type (insurance, medical, taxes, vehicles, etc.) I see
it as a way of taking care of my family.
For Claudia, organizing becomes a stress reliever. When she is fretting over
something or trying to resolve a problem, she finds organizing something often
takes her mind off the issue. As she does physical tidying, the mental work
seems to happen too. By the time she has completed the job, she often has an
answer to the problem that was worrying her.
Theresa spent two days reorganizing her closet. She sorted clothing by season
and color. Shoes were stored in matching plastic shoe boxes. Shelf dividers kept
folded tees from falling over. Finally, Theresa hung lavender scented sachets to
make it smell good. Now just walking into the closet brings a lift to her
spirits.
If you have never thought organizing could be an enjoyable activity, you might
reconsider. Give it a try and see how you feel after when things are well
ordered. You may be pleasantly surprised at how good you feel.
