Organizing and Life Lessons from our Global Pandemic
In a video-conference get-together I enjoyed with friends, a few days ago, the
topics we decided to talk about included what we had been doing, and what we've
learned...as we continue to navigate through the pandemic. Discussions fell into
six categories: Organization, DIY Projects, Conservation, Creative Projects, New
Skills, and Personal Discoveries.
Organization was universally mentioned. Judy learned to plan a week's worth of
menus, as well as how to order online and pick up her groceries once a week
after work. Several people had gone through files of papers and reorganized them
or set up a sound filing system. Nearly everyone had decluttered at least one
closet. Two had gone through their whole house and filled boxes to donate or to
toss.
Do-It-Yourself projects had been popular too. One man in the group said he and
his wife cleaned and re-stained their deck. Jane had done a small, but crucial,
repair on her sewing machine. Lucy, using Google and YouTube, repaired her
ceiling fan. (She received a lot of WOWs on that!) Bob fixed his garage door.
Many of the women had done their own manicures, pedicures, and facials. Only
one, however, had attempted to cut her own hair. That person was not me,
but I was certainly impressed.
Everyone had become more conscientious about conservation. Most now use less
toilet paper and fewer paper towels. Some use dryer balls instead of fabric
softener. Others grow herbs and vegetables. Two people had begun to raise
chickens. Several of us noted we did not spend on unnecessary impulse buys very
often. Unable or unwilling to browse in stores, our spending dropped, leaving
many of us contemplating how much we probably had wasted in the past.
Creative projects ranked high, especially needlework. Kathy has been turning
extra photos into cards to send. Cooking has been creative as many of us tried
new recipes, and used ingredients we had on hand, trying not to waste anything.
New skills, besides home repair, were often mentioned. Three people had
converted entirely to online banking. 'It's so easy to deposit a check in my
account. Why did I ever bother to go to the bank for this?' mused one. Doing
grocery and other shopping online for everyday things was a new experience for
many. So were meetings with Zoom and programs like it.
Some of us have made more personal discoveries. Jan had been worrying a little
about life after her husband retired. When he was home for two weeks, she found
they kept busy and enjoyed the time together. Some of us have re-evaluated our
friendships, taking care to keep up with those most important to us. Many have
enjoyed the extra time to interact with our families, from schoolwork to playing
games.
My favorite came from a man in our group who, furloughed from work, became the
primary caregiver for his four young children while his wife worked. 'I had no
idea how exhausting this could be. I have so much more respect for women who
stay home with their kids.'
Certainly, none of us wanted to learn these lessons the way we have. COVID-19
has devastated so many parts of our lives. But it has taught us we are strong
and resilient and can find new ways of being. Let's hope this pandemic fades,
but that we can keep the significant lessons we have learned.
