How Many Do I Really Need?
I was talking with my friend, Chris, last week, who happened to be smack in the
middle of cleaning out a desk drawer...a big one. It was a file drawer and,
while it had some files, the drawer also contained cables and computer
components, like external drives, etc. She found four sets of earbuds, her label
maker and cartridges, pens, DVD cases, and files with many miscellaneous things
in them.
She began saying, 'How have I accumulated all this stuff? Why do I have DVD
cases here? My computer does not even have a DVD drive. Cables and headphone
wires are tangled. And oh my gosh, the folders! I have one where I just stick
coupons and one where I stash return address labels, the free ones from various
organizations. I hardly ever send physical mail, I use email. And there are
enough 20% off coupons from a well-known big box store that I could probably buy
one of everything. Ok, maybe that is an exaggeration, but you get the idea.'
I commiserated with her, offered a couple of suggestions, and let her get back
to her task. I don't like to interrupt when people are cleaning out.
Decluttering is a mood to take advantage of and not let yourself get
sidetracked.
Chris called me back later to report her desk drawer was now in order. She had
gone through everything and asked herself if she needed it, or how many did she
need. She found other places for some of the extra office supplies she only
required occasionally. Some things went to a donation bag. She kept a few
address labels, some holiday ones, and others she thought were pretty. Most were
discarded. Next came coupons. Wrinkled, ancient ones, she tossed. Since her
local store does not care about expiration dates, she kept several...but set
some aside for her adult kids or friends who might be able to use them.
Chris said her next goal was to clear out other things she tended to stick into
boxes or on shelves for future use. 'Things just seem to multiply without my
realizing, although I know it was me just sticking them aside.' Among her
decluttering plans are bubble wrap and plastic bags, both of which she has
accumulated in mass proportions. Some of us have too many paper bags. And of
course, there are plastic deli containers we tell ourselves we're going to use
for leftovers...but that multiply exponentially more often than not.
We mindlessly keep many things, often stashing them away in a drawer for some
future use that never occurs. We may have makeup and perfume samples. We may
have greeting cards that came as 'free gifts' from various organizations that we
kept 'just in case.' Maybe you have a couple dozen catnip mice, and your cats
don't even play with most of them.
Challenge yourself to open drawers this week and see how many things you have
stashed. Ask yourself, 'Do I need this?' and if so 'How many of this item
do I REALLY need?
