Organized Strategies for Preventing Blisters

So, you just bought a brand new pair of strappy sandals and were so excited to wear them to a small, outdoor family reunion. You received a whole bunch of positive comments on them, but halfway through the get-together, you noticed a bit of a stinging sensation on the back of your foot. When you returned home and took off your new sandals, you discovered you had a big, ugly, painful blister. Is there something you could have done to prevent this?

1) Whenever I get new sandals (or even shoes, boots, etc.), I always stuff them (as much as possible) with rolled-up, heavy socks to help 'break them in.' Although it's tempting to wear them immediately, I never skip this step, allowing them to sit for at least three days.

2) I then wear this new footware, in my house, before wearing out of my house. I put a pair of thick socks on, and I walk around the house in them...just doing everything I normally do in my house...vacuuming, cooking, and such. I do this for at least an hour or two.

3) When I'm ready to venture out in them, I always bring an extra pair of comfy shoes or sneakers in a bag. If my new sandals begin to hurt at all (which is very rare if I've taken steps one and two above), then I change out of them right away.

Once I know I can rely on those sandals to not cause a blister, I'm home free.

Of course, it's important to buy sandals that fit well and sometimes, even with taking these above precautions, you may need to:

Tape a piece of self-stick moleskin inside your sandals where it may be uncomfortably rubbing against your skin.

Wear an adhesive bandage on the part(s) of your feet that are prone to blisters.

Keep your feet dry. If your feet are hot (sweaty), then you have a greater chance of getting a blister. A sprinkle of cornstarch on your feet on a hot day can help.

Finally, for me, personally, I also avoid wearing any sandal that has plastic or leather touching my skin, almost always opting for fabric instead.
