With regard to the Quarantine 15...and other notes...

In response to my June 15th Newsletter on the topic of Re-Organizing Your Health and Well-Being...

Hi Maria,

The points you make are so important, but the one about distancing really struck a chord. I'm adopting the term 'physical distancing' henceforth.

With regard to the Quarantine 15, I've actually lost a little weight because I've been eating healthier, purely by accident. Nice surprise! When everything shut down originally, my pantry was well-stocked with rice and beans and canned goods, and I thought that we might have to live on just those things for a long period. (I didn't realize, at that point, that grocery stores would still be open.) I could see us getting sick of rice and beans quickly if meals weren't interesting, so I started looking online for recipes that would use a variety of spices. So we've been eating well, mostly vegetarian (again, purely by accident), and less expensively during these crazy times, and also losing a little weight (about 5 pounds so far).

This may give you a smile. Video conferencing has been a godsend! I belong to a group of 65 women, with an average age of 70 - not ordinarily the folks you might think of for videoconferencing. Our group's primary mission is gender equality and we spend a lot of our time raising money for scholarships for women and girls. This year we awarded our four annual scholarships during a Zoom conference comprised of our group and our scholarship winners, and it was a great success. Surprisingly, many of us felt that the Zoom format was even more personal that our previous in-person presentation format. The scholarship winners have all grown up with video so they were relaxed and comfortable, and our members were able to attend without regard to driving or any other concerns. There's talk of using Zoom for this presentation even when it's no longer necessary!

Thinking of mental stressors, this may be more of an 'old-lady' thing, but I have stopped borrowing trouble on all fronts. I wish I had learned this much earlier, but I'm grateful to know it now! These days, if I have a choice, I won't do anything I don't enjoy, I refuse to be guilted into anything, and I feel no obligation to give an explanation. 'I'm sorry, but I have to say no,' said with a smile, works great. If someone presses me, and it might be something I'd enjoy but I need some time to think, I take a page from Oprah's book and say 'Let me talk to Jesus about this and I'll get back to you.' Everyone has accepted that well. I try to change things for the better when I can, and the things I can't affect, I give over to God. Tomorrow's not promised to anyone and if we don't make the most of today, it's our own fault.

And you're so right about the sunshine factor. Light affects many people's mental health to a greater extent than they realize. Even a short trip out to the mailbox in the sunshine is beneficial. I crave sunshine and love to get outside even if it's just to sit and read. My doctor, who has a mostly geriatric practice, says I'm one of his few patients with normal vitamin D levels.

I always enjoy your newsletters, especially the one I'm referring to, as you can see.

Thank you!
