Managing Stress

Here's a reader letter in response to my May 4th Newsletter on the topic of Managing Stress When It Seems Nearly Impossible to Do So...

Hi, Maria!

You offer some great advice on managing stress. Because I've lived alone a couple of decades, due to divorce and then an empty nest, I have learned a lot about handling loneliness at 72 years of age. That has served me well during the pandemic. Each day or two, I have tried to call someone I know who is in a situation similar to myself or someone I haven't talked with for a while... I don't wait for someone to call me. I listen to the news just enough to hear any new developments about COVID or practices I need to follow--more than that is depressing.

I have to admit I haven't exercised, but I have done a lot of work indoors by decluttering and rearranging/repurposing things in my home (lots of trips up and down the basement steps...that's exercise). Clearing my computer of unnecessary email and info I'll never use took me an entire week...it's working much faster now. I have taken my grandchild to and from school half of every week for seven years now, which means getting up very early in the morning, so (while I miss seeing her daily) I am relishing sleeping in while I can. I am more rested than I have been in almost a decade. Gas is cheap right now and very available, so I have found that going for a short drive during this beautiful season and listening to some of my favorite music as I go really does perk me up.

Pets are so helpful at this time. They love my attention and never get tired of listening to my worries and sadness. As you say, if life hands me something stressful or sad that I cannot undo or stop, I tell myself I am not all-powerful. I look for a solution. If there is one, I try to make change. If there isn't a solution, I try to accept the situation, put it aside as much as possible, and keep my mind on good things and changes that will improve my life and make me a better person. It takes a lot of practice to stop worrying! And, there are lots of competent counselors out there who will listen to our worries and help us deal with them.

Worrying is inevitable, but it is wasted time. Do something, if you can change what worries you. If not, put it aside and push on to something that is worthy of your time and thoughts. Life is too short to waste! My prayers are with those who are ill or have lost loved ones. I hope their loved one will get well. If not, I hope they will focus on happy memories of the one they lost.

Thanks for always having such good advice and practices to teach us!
