Mozart's Creativity Likely Had Lots To Do With His Schedule
Did you know that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, yes the same Mozart who created a
string of operas, concertos, symphonies and sonatas that profoundly shaped
classical music, took at least an hour each day to get dressed and prepared for
the day before working on compositions and teaching music lessons?
Did you also know that he often invested six hours daily eating with his friends
and participating in other leisure activities to give his mind a creative break?
According to a study in The Washington Post, some of the most influential,
creative people ever (like Mozart, Charles Dickens, Tchaikovsky, and Benjamin
Franklin) all were able to structure their days in a way that allowed ample time
for both creativity, and time to unwind and enjoy life...a nice balance of both!
What I found most interesting, while analyzing the data, was that most of the
creative/work time was done in fairly large chunks. For instance, Mozart's work
hours were from 7:00 in the morning until 12:00 in the afternoon (5 consecutive
hours). Then, he'd take a fairly long afternoon off, and pick up his
creative/work time again in the evening from about 5:00 to 9:00 (4 consecutive
hours).
While some people do well working in short bursts with many breaks in between,
others work better in longer marathon sessions with longer breaks in between.
It's important for us to find what works for each of us individually in order to
release the very best creativity within us.
Do you work better in short bursts with short breaks or longer marathon sessions
with longer breaks? Email me...I'd love to know!
