After All My Chores, I Can't Find Time to Do Projects Around My House
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
I am looking for suggestions. By the time I do my regular chores of cooking,
cleaning, laundry, etc., I find it hard to have time to do projects around my
house. I am especially busy now that I am caring for my 91-year old
mother-in-law, who has mild dementia. Thanks for any help!

Maria Gracia responds...
Hi Stacey,
Thanks so much for your note...and hugs to you and your mother-in-law.
It can be challenging to keep up with everything you have to do, plus care for
someone, plus get additional projects done. Have you considered hiring some help
if it's within your budget? I do know that, right now, many cleaning companies
require temperature checks of people they employ prior to cleanings, as well as
masks, safety certification, and contactless cleanings, so perhaps there is a
company you'd feel safe using right now. If you would love to hire out, but are
not comfortable having a professional cleaning company in your home right now,
if we can ever get past this pandemic, that's something you may wish to
consider.
If not, or in the meantime, because it's sounding like you have very little
personal time with everything you're currently doing, it's important to do two
things:
a) Streamline what you're doing. Think of ways that cooking and cleaning
can be done a little quicker, and with less hands-on necessity on your part. Use
your slow-cooker or instant pot to save time for instance. Consider buying
veggies that have already been pre-cut to save on meal prep time. Look for
one-pot recipes so there isn't a ton of cleaning to do afterwards. Perhaps opt
for an already-cooked meal, from your supermarket or a local restaurant, on some
nights to free up some time. Do a quick clean-up daily (run a disinfecting wipe
over the faucets, sinks, and toilets every night) and you'll spend a lot less
time deep-cleaning. Stop clutter (if that's an issue) in its tracks. Be sure
every item has a home, and those items are put back in their homes when you're
done using them...eliminating a search or what you need when you need it and/or
a nightly pick-up time.
b) Schedule your extra projects into your current schedule. When you're
making your weekly schedule, you likely have certain days and times you use for
dusting, vacuuming, bathrooms, etc. You have to do the same for your projects.
It has to be part of the schedule you set up...and not just an 'if I have time
left over, I'll do it' type of thing. Pick ONE extra project to work on at a
time. Schedule a definite 10 or 20 minutes to work on it, one or two days a
week. When that scheduled day or time rolls around, nothing but an absolute
emergency should stop you. No, you probably won't be able to get whatever it is
completely done, but it will be a start. And the next time you work on it, it
will be that much closer to being done.
One more thing I thought of, since you mentioned your mother-in-law is going
through some dementia...it's possible that she may need to be under someone's
watch for her safety. While you're working on a project, is it possible for
someone to keep her company for 30 minutes here and there so you can work on
your projects without worrying about her safety and well-being?
Hope this helps a bit.
