Summer is Not Canceled

We're still in the midst of a pandemic. It continues to be very important to take this virus seriously and to continue safe physical distancing, frequent hand washing, etc. to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. However, I've been hearing from a lot of people that they didn't do anything enjoyable during the past month of July...and are feeling down (and some very depressed) with staying home due to the status of the current health crisis.

I thought I'd offer some ideas for enjoyment that are safe, fun, and may help us all get through this time...without feeling that summer is canceled this year.

1) Use technology to have some virtual fun. All you need is a smart phone or smart device and a wireless hotspot. Go to a park, an overlook with a pretty view, or even park in the driveway of your favorite take-out restaurant, and use your technology to take a mini vacation. Just search for a live cam at a zoo if you're an animal lover, a virtual visit of a museum (like the Vatican or the Lourve), or virtually visit a national park in America.

2) Look no further then your own backyard.

* No matter how young, or young-at-heart, you are, there are no age restrictions or limits on blowing bubbles, hula hooping, jump rope, or drawing with chalk on the sidewalk or driveway.

* Walk barefoot in the grass or sit under a shady tree and read.

* What about going for a walk in your neighborhood? Maybe try your hand at riding your bike or skateboarding.

* Try a new recipe on your barbeque.

* Have a campfire in your backyard or a sit around the firepit in your drive, if its permitted. Share ghost or family stories. Enjoy roasting marshmallows or creating s'mores. Spread a blanket down on the grass and watch the stars.

* What about using a projector and a screen or white sheet (with a Bluetooth speaker) to create a backyard movie theatre?

* Create an outdoor nature scavenger hunt? Who can find 6 different types of leaves or a white and black rock?

3) It's OK if your outdoor plans are 'rained out.' Here are a few ideas if you need to have fun inside the house, due to rain, heat, etc:

* Play a board game or card game. Host a family tournament. There are so many options for every age group whether you play UNO, Monopoly, Game of Life, Clue, Candyland, Connect 4, or Trivial Pursuit. Or put together a jigsaw puzzle with your family.

* Create an indoor scavenger hunt for the kids, which might include finding items like a picture of each family member or an orange candle, etc.

* Try a new hobby such as a diamond art kit, knitting, crocheting, or enjoying an adult coloring book.

* Hand write a letter to an old friend.

4) You may be feeling comfortable enough to get away. My family is, in fact, going to Door County, Wisconsin for a few days this month...which is about a three hour drive. We booked a stay at an inn that we felt was following excellent safety protocol...in an area that has a good number of outdoor options for shopping, dining, and sightseeing. We look forward to taking a hike and/or a bike ride in Peninsula State Park, catching some rays on the beach, and just being with each other.

I know life isn't quite the same right now, but just like any day, it's important to be positive and find enjoyable outlets for ourselves. No matter what you do, be safe and healthy, and continue enjoying summer. After all, it goes by way too fast.
