Making a Commitment to Remain Calm

The other day, as I was filling up my car with fuel, I heard someone at a nearby gas pump make a not-so-nice remark to someone in relation to the t-shirt the other person was wearing. It was pretty clear the person who made the remark didn't even know the other person. The recipient of the remark got agitated pretty fast and it quickly began escalating into an 'in your face' shouting match. It was concerning, to say the least. Luckily, someone who worked at the gas station noticed that this was getting out of hand and was able to get both people back in their cars before the situation got worse.

You may be seeing this sort of thing more often than not. We briefly read a little blurb on the news, on social media, or a family member or friend says something that bothers us. What is our reaction to that? Do we just let it roll off, like water off a duck's back, or quickly react and say something without thinking of the repercussions?

In these unsettling times, many of us are living with a heightened state of anxiety and sensitivity. One tiny comment can easily end up in an all-out-war if we're not careful.

A lot of times, when we are irritated or frustrated, it's best to just step away. A quick unplanned response can be very dangerous to a friendship, a family relationship, or even a job. An unplanned, in-person response in public can result in injury or worse. Social media is one we must be ever-so-careful with, or there's a chance we'll spark a viral nightmare.

No doubt. Some situations or things that are said can be infuriating. But if we fuel anger with more anger, chances are that fire is not going to die out, but rather those flames are going to rise and spread.

Sometimes, the easiest thing to do is just walk away. Leave the situation. Get some fresh air. Take a bathroom break. Delete the email. Ignore the post. Don't engage in the conversation or challenge the person to a dual, so to speak.

Talk to a parent, mentor, or friend if you need time to just vent about what you have just seen or heard. Sometimes these trusted people can play devil's advocate and allow you to see another point of view that you hadn't thought about. Other times, they can just be a much-needed sounding board so you can let whatever it is off your chest.

It can be helpful to consider the person's past (if you know the person) or think to yourself, 'this person may be having a truly bad day,' when thinking about why they said what they said, or wrote what they wrote. Perhaps it will give you enough perspective...or not. We're all different and from our own walks of life...it's not always possible to be in agreement. Agreeing to disagree is OK.

Making a commitment to remain calm, even when it's very difficult to do so, allows us the opportunity to remember to take a deep breath and think before reacting.

In this day of social distancing, we have a lot of social isolation. Isolating even further by engaging in a fight someone else decides to start, making or responding to controversial statements,or arguing with people on social media is, at minimum, probably not going to end well.
