Help with Moths in Pantry and Best Containers for Flour and Such
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
Can you tell me how to keep moths out of my pantry and what are the best
containers to use for flour, macaroni, sugar, grains, and cereal? Thank you so
much!

Maria Gracia responds...
Hi Karen,
I'd love to help you with your pantry. Those pesky moths produce 400 eggs at a
time and are hard to get at if you are just removing the adult moths at the
flying stage. Their larva are the ones that cause such damage and contamination
to your food.
You'll need to remove everything from your pantry. Inspect all boxes, cookbooks,
pet food, etc. Any infested food needs to be thrown out in your outside trash
can to remove the eggs from your house. Even if you only see one bug in
something, there will be tons more in it that you do not see. Wash all shelves
and shelf lining down in a solution of half vinegar, half warm water, and
several drops of peppermint oil (which deters them.) After it is all washed
down, you can return all canned goods and glass containers to their places after
wiping them down. These bugs even like nuts and sweets so you may want to
repackage things or put these in the freezer for at least one week to kill any
existing larvae.
The best way to store flour, sugar, grains, pastas, and cereal is in airtight
plastic containers (I really like the ones that have a rectangular shape and a
nice pour spout) or clear mason jars. Both will make the most out of your space
and are easy to label and use.
By the way, moths are deterred by bay leaves, lavender and cedar, so it's a good
time to put some of that (open) in your pantry so they stay away after this
major cleaning. They can eat through plastic bags, so replace those with hard
plastic containers or glass.
I really hope that this helps and gives you a moth-free pantry!
