Transitioning Through a Wardrobe That No Longer Fits

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I've been enjoying your newsletters and am not sure what to do in my case.

I've lost 35 pounds during my island's Coronavirus lockdowns and curfews, just by not eating out, yay! New and old clothes I've been hanging to, actually fit me. I'm at the top of my normal weight, so I might lose like another 10 pounds. I donated everything I didn't care about and I'm using clothes that are a little big, here at home for Zoom, etc.

I travel frequently (not now of course!), sometimes for months, and have many 'nice quality for all seasons' pieces that I would hate to lose (they're big now). But I admit there's like 20 more nice outfits waiting for me to lose a little more weight.

So, I read that once you lose weight, you should be vigilant for a year to make sure you made it and that THAT is your weight. And my question is how do I 'transition' through that year, wardrobe-wise? Need your help!

This Reader Question was submitted by:

--La Maldo, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Maria Gracia responds...

La Maldo,

Thanks so much for your note. I'm very happy for you and you should be proud of yourself for setting and reaching your goals so far. I have no doubt that you're committed to doing so. Please know I'm am cheering for you from Wisconsin!

Regarding your question and comments:

First, good for you on donating everything you didn't care about. Taking that step was an excellent step in the right direction.

Normally, I tell people to only keep the clothes that fit them right now because keeping things you 'might' wear someday generally ends up taking up unnecessary space in the closet...and it's important to feel great about what we're wearing. When we do, it gives us a sense of accomplishment, reminding of us how far we've come, and in turn raises our self-esteem...which is so important.

For those outfits that are too big on you, but at the same time important to you, I would urge you to get them tailored to fit. This way, you can wear them right now. Is there a local company (or even a neighbor) that could do this for you? This way, you can continue to enjoy and use that wardrobe. If you lose more weight, you may have to get them adjusted again, and I know this can cost a bit...but if you really love those clothes, that would be a way to get the most out of them.

Otherwise, I recommend you donate those..and perhaps get yourself a new outfit or two, every now and then, that makes you feel great right now.

As far as the clothes that are currently a bit too small...as long as you really like them, your goal is to fit into them fairly soon, and you have the space to hang onto them for a bit, these can certainly be your 'goal outfits.' If it were me, I'd give myself a deadline (i.e. 'if i fit into these by x date, they're keepers. Otherwise, they get donated.')

I hope I've provided some doable ideas for you. Please write back soon and let me know how you're doing with your goals and your wardrobe!
