A Different Kind of Distancing...
We're still in the middle of a global pandemic that continues to be
heartbreaking for so many who have lost loved ones, and frightening for those
who have, or have family members and friends with, severe symptoms.
There is more disagreement, arguing, yelling, name-calling, etc. in person, on
TV, and online than I've ever seen before.
The kids are back in school, going back to school, will be home learning
virtually, or are now being homeschooled.
There is still major unrest in so many areas of the United States.
People are still out of work. Businesses are hurting.
And the presidential election is right around the corner...we all know the
tension already accompanying that.
All I can say is, brace yourself for the months ahead. Now, more than ever,
it's important to find as much positives as you possibly can.
We've been told, time and time again through the pandemic, to physically
distance. But today, I'd like to talk about a different kind of distancing that
we can all use each day to help us keep our calm and cool:
1) Distancing from the never-ending stream of news: Sure, it's important
to know what's going on, but it's very easy to get drawn into an 'all news, all
day' sort of world. Doing so is like entering a black hole. Give yourself a time
limit each day or just a news segment that's an hour (or 30 minutes) or less...
and stick to it. Set a timer if you have to. Too much can be toxic.
2) Distance from negativity or meanness: If your social media feed is
full of nothing but negativity and meanness, it may be time to 'unfriend' as
needed, and to 'friend' those who post mostly positive messages that make you
smile and help you believe there is still good in the world.
3) Distance yourself from unhealthy habits: Be careful about your intake
of white carbs, salt, foods high in saturated fat, sugar and artificial
sweeteners, alcohol, and caffeine...these can all lead to stress. Distance
yourself from your chair or sofa...get up often, move often, and exercise daily.
Distance your mind from stress...take the time for Yoga, or to meditate, or
simply to breathe deeply.
4) Distance yourself from TO DOs and projects: There is a time for work
and a time for play...and both are very necessary in our lives. Make a schedule
that includes both and stick to that schedule. When the work is done, it's
done. Distance yourself from it by having relaxing, enjoyable activities that
will then occupy your mind.
5) Distance yourself from things you can't control. Sometimes we put our
minds into unnecessary overdrive from things that we have no control over. When
you recognize this happening, force yourself to hold both your hands out in
front of you, and name off 10 blessings in your life, or 10 things you DO have
control over. Hold your hands out in two fists with your inner wrist facing the
sky. As you name each thing, straighten out another finger. Feel the tension
releasing each time you do, and once each finger is released in front of you,
raise both hands and imagine each tension lifting into the sky.
