What To Do With Meaningful Voicemail Messages

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

Hi, All! It's been a while since I've written, and appreciate every single email that comes my way, with thoughtful insights and surprises.

I'm a professional organizer, believe in purging all things that are not needed. Of course we all need things for emotional, physical, psychological reasons, so it encompasses a lot of things.

I have personally come across a dilemma. My uncle passed away in the spring. We were very close. He was the one who walked me down the isle over 40 years ago, came to my nursing school graduation, came to visit when my daughter was born on the west coast, and I went out to visit him on the east coast for his daughter's (my Goddaughter's) wedding, and his ceremony for being the Chiefs of Chiefs of Police for three states. That was all long ago, but I have just moved to the east coast from the west, and he was a very big reason.

More to the point. I have voicemails of his messages. I don't want to delete them. But I wonder if I should. I don't need them for emotional or spiritual reasons, I just like hearing his voice...and I'm wondering what others do also. So I suppose I do need them because it makes me smile...there will be more like this as time goes on, and am wondering what others do in this situation.

Please let me know your thoughts. It is an organizing question...what to do with old voicemails, maybe there is a way to keep them on a cd? Where they would not clutter my phone? Or my computer? I don't want to accidentally delete in error! I have come across this issue while helping clients organize also, so know it's more than just me. I just tell them to hold onto them, until they are ready to let them go. But, it would be great to have an alternative. Thank you! I appreciate your time!

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Peggy,

It's so good to hear from you. Thank you for your question!

First, I'm very sorry to hear about your uncle's passing. It's obvious you were both close, and that you miss him. My deepest condolences. It's never easy to lose someone, and especially someone with whom you share a deep emotional connection, like your uncle.

Very often, the voicemails people save are their very last (nearly tangible) connection to the caller, so it's understandable why it could be very difficult to delete...and why, also, some would like to save them.

One easy way to save voicemail recordings from a home answering machine is to play the voicemail on speakerphone. You can do this in front of a digital recorder...or bring it close to your computer, phone, or tablet, and use a recording software to record it. Audacity is a free software you can download. You'll then have an audio file. Be sure you listen to it to be sure it's clear, before you delete the original voicemail message.

If you're looking for a better quality recording from a home answering machine, if you can access your voicemail from your computer, depending on what phone company you use, you can record it, using a software like Audacity, right from your computer. We use our cable service for our home phone, and we can access our voice messages on the cable company's web site by logging into our account...and easily record them if we wish to do so.

If the messages are on your cell phone, you'll likely be able to save pretty easily. On my iPhone, I can go into the Phone app, and tap on Voicemail on the bottom of the screen on the far right. I then can tap on the voicemail I want to save, and then tap the share button. It looks like a box with an arrow pointing out of it. You can now share this voicemail with yourself via an email, AirDrop, etc. and save it to your computer or The Cloud. To save the voicemail in your phone, select Notes or Voice Memo. You can access the saved message again in either app, and play it back at your leisure. (If you use an Android, instructions will be different, but the idea is the same.)

Finally, I did a little searching online and found a service called voicemailsforever.com . I am not familiar with it or how it works, but I'm mentioning it because it may be worth looking into as well.

Of course, I'm certainly not suggesting that all voicemails are saved, but those that are special...the ones that touch your heart AND that you're pretty certain you'll listen to from time to time...can be saved and enjoyed for years to come using one of the above methods.
