Organizing a Top Freezer

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I loved your freezer organizing article, for a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. BUT...could you give me some tips for the refrigerator that has the freezer section on top? Thank you.

Maria Gracia responds...

Dear Michelle,

Thank you for your question. I am glad to know that you enjoyed the article on organizing a side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. I'm happy to give you some tips for refrigerators with a smaller freezer on top.

Since top freezers tend to be small, organization is key. You will likely not have room for a half of beef, but with some careful planning, you can have several meals ready to place into a crock pot.

First, remove all items. This gives you a good idea of what you have in the freezer, what needs to be thrown out, and what you can sort together. Group homemade meals together. Freeze soups and stews in sealable freezer bags, squeeze out the air, and lay them flat. Once they're frozen, 'store' them upright (like a file folder in a filing cabinet) to save space. If you have a number of these soup and stew 'files,' store them together in a container. Be sure to label the freezer bags, along with cooking instructions, on the outside of the bags.

Set up zones in the freezer...all meats in one area or bin, fruits for smoothies in another area or bin, etc. If you're using bins to separate categories, label those with the item that belongs there. Some of the best bins are ones that have a lower front, so you can see at a glance what it contains. Always label and date any packages of meat or other frozen foods.

Sometimes bags of fruits and vegetables are difficult to organize in the freezer. They tend to slide all over when you try to stack them. If you have a wire shelf in your freezer, get some binder clips, and clip the bags to the underside of the shelf in the freezer. This frees up space and also uses the space that's sometimes wasted between the bottom and top space.

Another way to keep the freezer organized and use the space more efficiently is to keep an inventory of what you have. This helps ensure you don't buy more of the same items just because you didn't realize you still had some in stock. Cross off items as you use them. This will also help you save some money because you won't be throwing out old food with freezer burn.

If your freezer is very tiny, you could take the shelves out to free up some more space. This may not work for everyone, but it could help make organizing and seeing what is in the freezer easier.

Hope these ideas help you organize your top freezer in a way that works for you. Thanks for writing and asking such a great question!
