There is Just Something So Special About a New Notebook
Thinking back, years ago, to when I was anticipating the first day of school,
one of the very first school supplies on my list was a new notebook. There is
just something about sitting down at a table and flipping the cover open to that
new blank page.
Still today, and even though I'm a huge advocate of technology, I continue to
use notebooks for various reasons. I have a notebook on my desk so I can jot
down notes from phone conversations. I have a small one in my purse, in case I
have an idea while I'm out and about. I have one that I exclusively use for
sketching out a scrapbooking layout. There's another that's on the side table,
right by the living room sofa, that I use while watching TV. Every now and then
I will open it to write down a product name from a commercial a saw on TV...or
the name of a movie from a movie trailer I just saw.
I like the spiral-bound ones, as opposed to the tape-bound ones. I find they're
a bit easier to write in. That being said, nostalgia of those black and white
composition notebooks is sort of fun.'
An article on Wired stated, 'The composition notebook's trademark black and
white marbling pattern has its origins in 12th century Japan, when artists
designed decorative marbled paper by floating concentric circles of watercolors
on the surface of water and blowing on the pigments to create swirling patterns.
This type of decorative paper-making, called Suminagashi, is the oldest ancestor
to the composition notebook's famous speckled pattern.'
They're not great notebooks, in my opinion, because they don't lay flat...and
pen ink often leaks through the paper. But they do bring back fond memories
for sure. And some folks still swear by them.
With back-to-school season currently in session, or starting soon (in person,
blended, or virtual), I'm ready to get a few new notebooks to celebrate the
new season. I'm thinking I'll use one specifically for jotting down notes for
the monthly book chats I attend...and perhaps another for simple journaling
while I'm out and about.
I would love to hear your thoughts about notebooks, the type you use, how often
you use them, and what you're using them for. While you're busy turning over a
new leaf and getting a fresh start this coming fall, why not pick up a new
notebook and start something new? Page 1 awaits.

information for three minutes. Unless it is committed to paper, you can lose an
