How many purses are practical to have?

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I just love your newsletter...I read it with my coffee every single morning!

I have a question for you about purses. The other day, while I was organizing my bedroom closet, I counted up 24 purses. Two of those were special occasion that I use for weddings and fancy events when they come up. But 22 of them are casual, everyday purses. I hardly ever use any of them because it's kind of a pain to transfer my stuff from one purse to another. But it pains me a bit to get rid of them because a) most of them were not cheap or b) a few of them were gifts. That being said, I'm on a mission to simplify my life and my closet is packed full. What are your thoughts on how many purses are practical to have?

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Carrie,

I'm so glad that you're enjoying my newsletter, and it makes my day that you're reading it daily with your coffee.

Your question about how many purses are practical to have is going to be a different answer for every person. For instance, for someone who LOVES purses, uses most or all of them on an alternating basis, has ample storage space for them, and has them organized nicely, it may be absolutely practical for this person to have many purses with no issues.

Another person may have a whole bunch, only use one of them, never use most of the others, have very little storage space, and have a surplus of them stuffed in a closet so they never see the light of day. In this case, it's really not practical to keep that many.

Here are my thoughts based on the personal situation you described:

1) If you use those two special occasion purses for weddings and such, keep those. They're probably not taking up much space, and it's nice to have one or two fancy purses on hand...as long as they match most special occasion outfits that you have.

2) If you're only keeping your other 22 purses because they were pricey or a gift, and you're not using them, neither of those reasons are good enough ones to hang onto them all. You can try selling those that were pricey if you wish, and you may make a bit of money back on them. Otherwise, I recommend you give them to a friend or neighbor, or donate them...don't look back--that money was already spent and you can't do anything about that now. The next time you see a nice purse, give it a lot of consideration before buying. If the purse you're storing and not using was a gift, remember, gifts are given from the heart and without any strings attached. Donate those as well. Next time you get a purse as a gift, if you're certain you're not going to use it, try returning it for a store credit or something you will use.

3) You mentioned that you aren't using some of your purses because you don't like transferring the contents from one to another. I agree...this can be a bit of a pain. If you feel you really love 'a few' of your purses, and you may actually use them if it weren't such a pain to transfer items from one to the other, consider a purse organizer. Everything goes into the purse organizer, and then you slide the organizer into your handbag. Want to switch purses? The only thing that then has to be transferrred is the organizer.

Finally, let me tell you about MY personal situation. I really simplified and I now only have three purses. The one I use all the time is a Michael Kors handbag that my daughter gave me for Christmas. It means a lot to me because she scraped every penny together to buy me this handbag. In fact, when she gave it to me, she was so excited watching me open the gift that she was nearly shaking. I will never forget the look of anticipation in her eyes as I was opening the box. Every time I grab my purse, it makes me happy. It's the perfect size for my things and it's a muted purple...one of my favorite colors. I use it every single day. I also have one tiny, special occasion purse in silver and another special occasion purse in gold. That is it...I donated all the others shortly after Christmas, and I see no need in having another at this point in time.

I hope this has given you helpful thoughts to ponder.
