What is the Best Way to Store Shopping Bags?

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

What is the best way to store shopping bags? I have accumulated many and some are decorative. I can't seem to figure out how to store them for future use.

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Marianne,

I too save a stash of shopping bags from stores and use them when I want to donate some items to charity, or to bring something to a neighbor, or for whatever random purpose. I have a clear, plastic bin for storing paper and plastic shopping bags, and I'll only store what will fit in this bin...and no more. If it doesn't fit, it gets recycled.

Alternately, you can store all of the smaller bags in the largest bag you have. In fact, this is how I store my cloth tote bags...which I love because they can be used over and over, they're super-sturdy, and they're washable. All those I have are stored in one larger tote, and I have that tote stored on a shelf (you can also use a hook) in my utility room closet.

By the way, if you need to store a small supply of those plastic shopping bags you get at the grocery store, those can be tucked into an empty tissue box, and pulled out one at a time (like a tissue) when needed.

Thanks for writing and hope this helps a bit!

How to Label Clear Plastic Bins

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I enjoy your posts very much. I am a professional organizer with my own business. I have a question. I saw in a recent newsletter that you like clear storage bins. ME TOO, but I am having a hard time finding SOMETHING to label them with that will stay on the bins. Right now, I use INDEX cards and then tape it to the tote with packing tape, but sometimes it falls off. I don't like to write DIRECTLY on the bin because you may need to change what is in it. What do you suggest?

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Patricia,

Thanks for your question. First, and especially for large bins, I print whatever the title is on a sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. I use a thick, bold font and make it as large as the paper will handle. (Alternately, you can write it out by hand if you wish...just use a very thick black marker, like a Sharpie, and draw large letters.)

Then, I tape the paper to the INSIDE of the bin, horizontally, with the words facing out so you can see them from the outside of the bin. I use clear shipping tape and have never had an issue with the 'paper label' falling off. I tape it on all four sides, the entire length of the paper...this way, it sticks well and there are no loose paper edges to get caught on anything in the bin.

Just as a reminder, of course, this will only work with clear, see-thru bins, which is why they're the only type I ever buy.

Hope this helps.
