How Can I Be Organized to Read More?
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
How can I be more organized to find the time to read more? I have a number of
industry magazines that I need to read for business purposes, not to mention
all of the correspondence, but I'd also like to find time to read a novel or
two now and then. Over the years, I just don't read as much as I used to...and
it's affecting my relevance in the business world. Plus reading relaxes me, so
when I don't find time to do so, my stress levels go up. Your thoughts?

Maria Gracia responds...
Hi Sam,
Great question. I have a good deal of business reading myself, and I enjoy
reading to relax as well. Here's what I do:
1) For my business, no matter how busy I may be, I always schedule reading time
in every day. For me, I do this during the afternoon hours. In my phone calendar
app, I specifically designate 30 minutes as 'Biz Reading Time' and only an
emergency (which doesn't come up that often) will override it. This time each
day not only helps me keep up, but is a nice break from the computer, calling,
writing, meeting with people, etc. I mostly only do my business reading on
weekdays.
2) Most of my 'enjoyment reading' on weekdays is done at night, for 20-30
minutes prior to going to sleep. Plus, on at least one or two days a month on a
weekend day, I do snuggle up on the sofa, a comfy chair, in a coffee shop, or
outdoors if it's nice out, and read for an hour... and sometimes a bit more.
While there's always something that needs to be done on the weekend... household
chores, gardening, (now raking), etc., every now and then, those other things
can wait, especially if a mental break is greatly needed.
3) Finally, if I know that wherever I'm going, that I will have 'waiting time'
(hair stylist, riding on public transportation, etc.), I always bring reading
material along...sometimes business-reading and other times
entertainment-reading.
If you're a busy person, and if you say to yourself, 'I'll read when I have
time,' there's a big chance that reading time is going to be pushed aside for
something that you deem to be more pressing. Instead, set a specific time to
read each day, and make it part of your day-to-day schedule. Whatever time you
designate, set a timer for your alloted reading time, find someplace comfortable
and well lit, and begin.
Hope this helps.
