What is an organized way to store candles?

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

Votives, tapers, pillars, some in jars, some with glitter, some with bows, even emergency candles...I have everything in the way of candles, but I don't know how to store them or what to store them in. Any suggestions...especially, to store the scented ones?

This Reader Question was submitted by:

---CK in North Carolina

Maria Gracia responds...

Dear CK,

I love candles too! As you acknowledge, there are certain things to take into consideration when storing them. Improper storage can lead to damage by heat, light and/or friction. Even the position they are stored is an important point.

To keep their shape and quality, all candles should be stored in as cool and dry an environment as possible. I store mine in a large wooden hutch that is located in the coolest room of my house. Candles should be stored out of direct sunlight, which can cause their colors to fade.

Pillars and tapers are wrapped individually in tissue paper and laid flat in a wooden box, in a single layer, to avoid warping, bending or nicking. My scented votives are stored in plastic freezer bags, one scent to each bag, to keep fragrances fresh and avoid mingling. Never store scented candles next to food items.

The scented candles in jars are already protected by the covered containers. I store my jars upright on a shelf, tightly covered, in the same cabinet where I store the rest of my decorative candles.

I have several white pillar candles and tea lights that I keep in the event of power outage. They are stored all together, along with a lighter. For these candles, I worry less about damage as they are purely utilitarian in nature.

By the way, since we're on this topic, any time I light a candle, I set a timer on my phone alarm. This way, if I know I'm going to bed soon, the alarm will remind me to extinguish it. Also, if I light a candle and I know I'm leaving home soon, I place my car keys next to the candle...reminding me to extinguish it. Remember, unattended candles are a serious safety hazard. For anyone unsure whether or not you're going to be attentive to them, opt for battery-operated candles instead.

I hope this is helpful!
