The other day, I was on a Zoom video conference with a client who was working out of her home in her kitchen. She needed a pen to jot down some notes. I watched her as she opened nearly every drawer and cabinet searching for a pen. She apologized and told me she had to run upstairs to see if she could find one...and she returned a few minutes later, telling me she dug one out of her purse.

We have an ample supply in each jar...and they're all in working order.

When we need one, we know exactly where to find it.

Most of the time, they get returned...although now and then my 16-year-old will neglect to do this and leave a pen or pencil on the counter. If she does, I simply ask her to return it to its home.

Also, If a pen runs out of ink, it gets tossed. If a pencil needs sharpening, we sharpen it before it gets returned to the jar.

Easy and no frantic searching.
