I Have 66 Years of Clutter to Dispose Of

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

Day one of retirement...where do I start to get organized big time? I have 66 years of clutter to dispose of. Help please!

This Reader Question was submitted by:

--Marilyn H.

Maria Gracia responds...

Marilyn,

First off, happy retirement! If I were you, I'd take just a touch of time to relax after all those years of hard work.

Many folks ask me this same question: Where to start?

And honestly, my answer is always the same. It's not that important WHERE you start. It's just important that you start. Because once you do, you'll be well on your way!

It doesn't matter if you have 6 days, 6 months, 6 years, or 66 years of clutter. The first plan of attack is always to simplify your belongings.

Pick a room...any room. It could be the one that bothers you the most. It could be the one with the least amount of clutter. It could be the one that is visible to most people.

Then, grab some empty bags or boxes and begin putting things into them that you no longer need or want. If you plan to donate, have one box for DONATE and the other for TRASH. Be sure you deliver donations to your local donation center (or have them picked up) and put your trash at the curbside...every week, at minimum.

Just focus on decluttering for now...and then write to me once you've filled up a few bags or boxes.

Trust me, it doesn't have to get any more complicated than this.

Best of luck beginning your decluttering project...and in all your adventures ahead. I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

--Maria
