The Importance of Routine in a Time of Uncertainty

Just the other day, I woke up to a phone call from a friend who lives about 30 minutes away from me. Her son came into contact with somebody who tested positive for Covid...and her whole family was quarantining. It was Day 6 of the 14-day quarantine period. I could definitely hear the frustration in her voice. Nobody had symptoms, thank goodness. But she was very concerned about finances (she doesn't get paid when she's home from work), her husband was making pancakes (or, as my friend says, a huge mess in the kitchen), and I could hear their two middle-school-age kids bickering upstairs. 'Ugh,' she said, 'it has been one heck of a week...and we still have another one to go.'

I get it. When our regular routines are being challenged, it's easy to be a bit (or more than a bit) 'on edge.' As of late, I've thought to myself, am I going to get a call from a contact tracer one of these days...or will my husband or our daughter? We try to be as careful as we could be and follow all the safety protocols, but we've all been out of the house on a number of occasions. My daughter is in school. I teach fitness classes at the gym. My husband has taken the car in for an oil change...and has been in several stores to get various odds and ends.

But then, I erase those 'what if' thoughts from my head. After all, anything can happen that can throw a routine off kilter...any day of the year...pandemic or no pandemic.

I just read, on social media, about a Facebook friend who stepped off the curb, and somehow tripped, fell, and broke her ankle. She's out of commission for awhile as she recovers.

A neighbor just suddenly lost his job of 15 years. The company he worked for that has been struggling since the start of the pandemic, just had to close their doors permanently. This neighbor and twenty other employees are now all out of work, and seeking other employment.

Even something minor, like a cup of coffee that spills right before you have to leave for work can be an annoyance and a disruption in routine.

Today, someone posted on Twitter that she's done with routines because life is too uncertain these days. Yet, routines are what most of us absolutely and positively need in our lives. Routines ground us. They provide us with structure and discipline. They help us be more productive and give us a sense of control. We have to make a lot of decisions in a given day. Routines alleviate that decision-making process.

Yes, now and then, our routines get disrupted. That's just life. But really, for most people, that doesn't happen too often.

I wake up when my alarm clock sounds. I get dressed, grab some breakfast, and head to the gym to work out. I drive home, take a shower, and get a bunch of work done. I go outside and breathe in the fresh air, listen to the birds, and admire the sights of the season. I do a load of laundry every night from start to finish, clean whatever is on the schedule that day, light a fragrant candle after dinner, read before bed, etc. etc. These routines, and more, have happened every single day for years and years.

Has my routine ever been disrupted? Of course. But not very often.

Have I disrupted my own routine? Certainly. It's fun to take a vacation, or work on a new goal, or go on a spontaneous lunch. In fact, because I have a routine, I'm able to do all of these and more...without falling way behind with my tasks and projects.

While most of us enjoy occasional elements of excitement and surprise, there is a calming effect when we know what to expect, and have a plan to follow. And if that plan gets quashed for one reason or another, and it most certainly will, having a routine to come back to soon gives us something comforting to look forward to ahead.
