Should I Be Doing Estate Planning?
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
My husband, Jim, and I are in our 40s. We have two children (teenagers) and own
a home. Jim feels we should do some estate planning. My first thought to that
was, 'What?! We're only in our 40s. Why in the world would we do that?' But
maybe I'm missing something. What are your thoughts on this?

Maria Gracia responds...
Hi Lola,
You're not too young to start estate planning...and for anyone a bit older,
it's never too late to do so either. You can find extensive information on the
Internet to, at minimum, answer any basic questions you may have.
Having a basic estate plan in place helps to ensure that both family and
financial goals are met...and family members have peace of mind...should we
pass away...which is, hopefully, a long, long, long time away. This is
definitely not the most fun subject, but it is important.
The purpose of an estate plan is to help allocate your assets after your death,
and to determine who will make financial and health decisions for you if you are
unable to do so yourself. It also allows you to designate a guardian for your
children.
An estate plan typically includes a will, living will, and trust, beneficiary
designations, guardianship, and assignment of power of attorney(s) for
financial and health decisions.
Being organized when it comes to your finances and your family is key for your
peace of mind and for the well being of your loved ones.
Also, once you create your estate plan, draw up your will, designate your
beneficiaries, etc. you should check from time to time to be sure that
everything is still up-to-date, and to make any necessary revisions.
So, to answer your question, yes, it's always a good idea to be organized and
have plans in place, whether we're talking about estate planning or anything
else in life.
