Keeping Up With the Laundry
My friend called the other day and was frustrated with the amount of laundry
she had to do. She revealed that she handles this task twice a week, for her
family of four...and that she's always three loads behind.
Her explanation clearly explained why she was having laundry challenges. It was
obvious to me, as an organizing expert, that only doing laundry duties twice a
week, for her family's needs, was not nearly enough.
There are three people living in my home...me, my husband, and our 16-year old
daughter. We have our pajamas, our daily workout clothes, my daughter's
lifeguarding attire, the clothes we wear at home/work each day, and our
undergarments. We have towels for after showers, after washing our faces, and
for our hair. When you think about it, that's a lot of laundry...and that's not
counting the bed linens that get changed each week.
Each family is different, but I know that if I skip doing laundry even one day,
it will pile up and begin to get out of control.
It doesn't take a ton of 'hands-on' time to do laundry. I invest about five
minutes checking and treating garments for stains (if applicable), tossing them
into the washer, and starting a load. Then, the machine does its work while I
get a whole bunch of TO DOs done during the cycle. I then toss the clothes in
the dryer or hang the delicates on a dryer rack. Again, tons more done while the
dryer is in progress. Once the dryer cycle is done, the clothes are removed
immediately.
The most time-consuming part is folding the clothes after the dryer cycle is
complete. But even that takes 10 minutes or less.
All-in-all, it takes about 15 minutes of hands-on time to do one load of wash.
This is something most anyone can do.
Even if you have a larger family and must do two loads of laundry each day,
that's still only 30 minutes per day of hands-on time.
If you have a washer and dryer at home, and you're always caught up, great! That
means you're running the washer and dryer just enough for your family. But if
you're consistently behind on laundry, follow the one-load-a-day system (or
two-load-a- day system if necessary). Don't skip any days. You'll be able to
keep up with your laundry, and never fall way behind.
By the way, when we go on vacation (which, with Covid, that may be awhile away),
we wash our clothes every few nights at our hotel. This is a huge time and
stress saver when we return.
