I tried something new this year...and it worked out very well!

Hi Maria,

I tried something this year and it worked out very well. First, I emptied the basement. Not only to clean, but to get rid of those unused items...and had a yard sale on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

The next five days, I emptied out the office and garage and added to the yard sale items that were not yet sold, and had another yard sale that weekend.

The next five days after that, I emptied out and cleaned the kitchen, bedrooms and living room. Again utilizing Saturday and Sunday for another yard sale of what hadn't sold previously, and these additional items.

We then had one final sale the following week for anything not yet sold. The last sale was a 'make an offer before it's gone forever' sale.

I made between $200 to $400 each weekend...hosting a total of four yard sales, all back-to-back weekends. It was not as stressful as trying to get it all out at one time and having enough tables to do everything at once. I did have some time for deep cleaning, while working in each area, as well. It made a big difference.

For those items left over from the yard sale, I pulled out the more valuable items. I'll attempt to sell those via Next-door, Facebook Marketplace etc. But, it really reduced the amount of those listings to be done and I got rid of a ton.

I also did not price items, but had only five to six that I was really serious about having prices on. I told people to make a reasonable offer on their items of interest. Most were very good. One lamp I would have priced at $5 went for $10. Only two or three were really low bidders, but the goal was to reduce my items so I let them go cheap. Plus, that also meant less work for pricing the items. I had a whiteboard listing items that I did have set prices on, so no problems there.

I thought I'd pass on this unique way I came up with reducing my items, by hosting several back-to-back yard sales. Might help someone else out there!

Donation Requests

Hi Maria,

When I receive 'junk mail' asking for a donation, I say a short prayer on opening it. For causes I agree with, those get a 'gift.' For those I do not agree with, I let God sort it out.
