  Ask Maria

When to undecorate and how to store?

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

Two questions. First, how soon do you 'undecorate' for Christmas, and second how do you store your Christmas decorations? The first question will help my new wife (second marriage for both of us...and we just celebrated our first Christmas) and I compromise. She wanted to undecorate the day after Christmas, but I felt that was way too early. We can all use a bit more Christmas this year, don't you think? And the second inquiry is more for me since I'm in charge of the storage.

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Roger,

First off, congratulations on your marriage. How wonderful for you both!

Everyone has their own traditions when it comes to undecorating. Some people like to take everything down the day after Christmas in preparation for the new year ahead. Others like it to linger on a bit.

January 6th, exactly 12 days after Christmas, has always been the 'real' last day of the Christmas season for my family, since I was a child. So our family always undecorates on December 7th...and the 8th too, if we have a lot displayed.

That being said, I do give all of our new gifts homes the day after Christmas, and I do begin to put away some Christmas gear, like Christmas serving plates, linens, and such.

I understand both of your points of view. YES, we can definitely use a bit more Christmas this year. It is also nice to begin the new year with a bit of simplification. So, perhaps you can continue displaying decorations in the room you're in most...likely the living room, or wherever the tree is. Then, begin stowing away decorations in the other rooms...the kitchen, the bathrooms, and such.

Regarding your second question, we have a few artificial trees, which we dismantle and store in Christmas tree bags. All of our Christmas ornaments, lights, and other decor are sorted, stored, and stacked in six large storage containers with lids. Each container is labeled 'lights,' 'fireplace decor,' etc. so we can easily locate what we need next season We have a closet in our basement designated for Christmas, and all Christmas decor gets stored in there. We also hang our wreaths in that closet using Command Strip hooks.

Wishing you both a wonderful new year ahead...and a marriage filled with joy always.
