  Organizing Thought of the Day

Connectedness: It's not always a good thing

One of the biggest 'catch-phrases' of last year (and so far this year as well) was, 'we're all in this together.' Yes, in many cases, that's true. We're all challenged with this pandemic after all, albeit some way worse than others. In many cases, of course, that phrase...'we're all in this together' is not true at all. We all know how many different thoughts and ideas can tear us apart.

Connectedness can be a very good thing. Think 'united we stand, divided we fall.' When we're working together towards one goal or one cause, there's a much higher chance that target is going to be met.

That being said, connectedness is also sometimes a very bad thing. In fact, there are times when connectedness can be toxic.

Being connected with a person who always puts you down is not a good connection.

Being connected with a person who makes you feel like you're always wrong and he or she is always right is not a good connection.

Being connected with a person who is always looking for an argument, rather than a deeper understanding of you both, is not a good connection.

Being connected with someone who displays constant signs of disrespect towards you and what you believe is not a good connection.

Being connected with someone who causes you to always 'walk on eggshells' is not a good connection.

And of course, a toxic relationship doesn't have to be a romantic relationship. This applies to every connection we have, ranging from family members, to friends, to co-workers, to businesses and organizations we frequent.

So many folks feel getting organized is about getting rid of excess items, finding more time, or locating storage space. Yes, all of those are 'part' of getting organized.

In reality, getting organized is so much bigger...and that includes sorting out your nourishing relationships from those that are poisoning you.

In 2021, be organized with your 'circle of connectivity.' Make it a point to distance (at minimum), or stop all contact when possible, with those who aren't contributing to your life in a positive way.
