  Organizing Thought of the Day

Finding Inward Productivity During Outward Chaos

Outward chaos...there has been a lot of it for quite some time now. Between the pandemic, the political unrest, the social unrest, and the economy, we've been living in very uncertain times. All of this has taken a toll on the productivity of most people. It's very easy to get distracted when life around us is in a state of pandemonium.

That being said, there are ways to find inward productivity during outward chaos. Here are three activities that help ground me, so that I am investing less time involving myself in the chaos, and more time doing my projects and goals in a productive, mindful, peaceful manner.

1. Set up check-points: Use your cell-phone timer (or any timer) to sound every hour. When it does, take a full two minutes to stop what you're doing, stand, stretch, take a few deep breaths, and ask yourself what you're doing at that very moment. If you're working on the project or goal that is in line with your current goals in life, great. Continue. But if not, you now have the reminder, and the opportunity, to stop doing whatever you're doing...and get back to working on your originally intended project or goal.

2. Don't take the world on your shoulders: While it's important, as a human being living in a society with other human beings, to keep up with what's happening in the world...in our country...in the town we live in, most of what happens on a day-to-day basis is not going to change one iota if we're thinking about it all day or not. Invest your time wisely when it comes to watching, listening to, responding to, or involving yourself in something that is going to have no true impact, except a negative one, on your emotional well-being and your productivity.

3. Be careful about making excuses to yourself: It's very easy to convince ourselves that something chaotic happening locally, nationally, or internationally is the reason for our diminished individual productivity. In some very small circumstances, this may be the case, but most of the time, it simply isn't. Be careful of saying to yourself, 'Well I couldn't get anything done today because this situation was happening...' Unless the situation is affecting you directly, like you had to take a family member to the hospital, or your car broke down, or you can't get into your workplace due to a water main break, etc., it's very easy to use whatever is happening 'out there' as an excuse for not getting anything accomplished. A more productive statement might be, 'Despite all that's happening 'out there' right now, I'm committed to focusing and working on my task or product 'here and now.''

Do whatever you can to ensure that outside chaos doesn't affect your inside peace and productivity.

All people have clutter to some degree. You may have a little. You may have a ton. MOST people are somewhere right in the middle.

For anyone who has clutter, have no doubt in your mind that CLUTTER GROWS. Small clutter challenges soon turn into large clutter issues.

Plus, clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may have in your closet, the overload of toys in the toy room, the boxes of stuff in the basement, or the stuffed-to-the-max drawers and closets in your home. Clutter can actually invade your life in FOUR forms...

1. Physical Clutter
2. Paper Clutter
3. Digital Clutter
4. Emotional Clutter

Once clutter is here, it begins to wreak all sorts of havoc...

There is only one way to get rid of clutter...and that is by using a proven- effective clutter-removing system. Only then will you be able to face clutter head-on and have the clutter-free life you deserve.

  Take Action

___ 1. Do today's (January 13) Organizing TO DO provided in my January Organizing Checklist. It's focused on your desk in your home, your office, or both. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access it.

___ 2. Clean out your wallet. Take three minutes or so to remove any old store or ATM receipts, credit cards or retail cards you never use, business cards you don't need to be carrying around, etc. Then, organize your cash...$1 bills first, $5 bills second, etc. I tuck any gift cards in the same section as my paper money. Finally, organize your credit cards, store cards, insurance cards, etc. I keep my driver's license in the plastic, see-through slot. My health insurance card and prescription card are BEHIND my license. Then I have a few slots where I keep my debit card, a personal credit card, and a business credit card. I don't carry store cards around with me unless I absolutely have to...most stores will allow me to simply provide my phone number. For the few I do, such as those that have to be 'punched' to indicate that I've made 'so many' purchases, I keep those in one additional wallet slot until I've earned my 'reward' (whatever that may be.)

___ 3. Do you remember what the common space bandits are? They can easily take your space captive and cause a whole lot of clutter. Review my '5 common space bandits' article so you can find out what they are AND so you can get your space back! Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access it.
