  Organizing Thought of the Day

Sorting Things Out

When it comes to getting organized, sorting things out is big. Sorting begins in preschool as children are taught to put blocks in one container, and crayons into another. As adults, we often 'sort' without thinking about it. Clothing is put in clothes closets, and we'll often sort pants in one section and shirts in another. Towels are placed in the linen closet, often sorted into bath towels, face towels, and hand towels.

Physical clutter often happens when sorting is neglected. Think about the infamous 'junk drawer.' Random stuff is just added to the drawer without rhyme or reason resulting in chaos.

The more sorting is kept in mind...putting like-items with like-items, the more organized our environments will be.

Something I like to use, specifically when sorting small items that will be stored in a drawer or on a shelf, is a multi-compartment organizer. I recently found a fun and functional one that I really like.

It's called the Endless Functions Felt Desk Drawer Organizer and you can find it by visiting:

https://amzn.to/35f5ijJ

Here are a few reasons why I like it, over other drawer organizers:

1) Generally, when you purchase a drawer organizer, it comes in one piece, and there is no flexibility...which often means you can't make the most use out of the space in the drawer you use it in. The various sizes of the compartments in the Endless Functions product can be placed in a drawer in many ways (versus one way), which gives you a lot of flexibility and allows you to use drawer space effectively in drawers of any size. They're also deep enough to sort effectively, but still shallow enough to fit in most drawers.

2) These compartments are stylish enough to 'not' tuck away. They can be used on a desk, on a shelf, on your craft room table, etc. They're made of a soft, but sturdy, material...and the ones I have are in an attractive charcoal color.

3) You can sort so much with these like cosmetics, office supplies, craft items, thread for sewing, hair accessories, toiletries, kids art supplies, tea bags and coffee pods, tools, etc.

No matter what, always remember that when you have a big disorganized pile of 'whatever,' be it photos, mail, clothing, papers, or toys, organization always begins with sorting. When you sort like-items with like-items, then contain to keep those items together, you'll immediately see that big disorganized pile transformed into a more organized, functional space that allows you to find and retrieve what you need quickly and easily...no rummaging required. Plus, it allows you to quickly see what you don't need, so you can get rid of it.

  Inspiration

'Why are they doing that?' his mother said, frowning at her grandsons. The boys were sorting the casserole into piles on their plates. 'Doing what?' Eve asked. 'Why aren't they eating their food?' 'They don't like it when things touch,' Eve said. 'What things?' his mother asked. 'Their food. They don't like it when different foods touch or mix together.' 'How do you serve dinner, in ice cube trays?' (Rainbow Rowell)
