  Organizing Thought of the Day

Trying something new

While following day-to-day routines can serve each and every one of us very well, choosing to do something out-of-the-box, out of our comfort zones, is a good thing.

1) It's a great way to introduce us to something new. Doing something new helps keep us young-at-heart.

2) It gives us practice (and tolerance) for change. Even though this is a change we're making ourselves, practicing change makes it easier for us to change gears with other things when we 'have to.'

3) It forces our brains to 'think,' 'problem solve,' and 'be creative,' which is great for long-term brain function.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to doing something new...and doing that something new for 21 days in a row is a good way to decide if it's something you love, something you wish to continue, or something you want to become better at doing.

My friend, Diane said, 'When I tried this a few years ago, I couldn't hold a crochet hook. Now I sit in a room full of yarn and projects flying off the hook!'

I love that she said that because it proves how powerful this concept is. I've seen many of Diane's creations and they are AMAZING...all because she decided to try something new, and commit to giving it her best shot CONSISTENTLY and DAILY for a short period of time.

What do you want to do for the next 21 days?

Learn a new language
Quilt
Try out new swimming techniques
Eat food you've never tried before
Give up foods with added sugar
Do random acts of kindness
Organize years of photos
Stay off your phone during mealtimes
Commit to daily exercise

Decide on what you want to do. Commit to doing it for 21 days in a row. Evaluate at the end of your 21 days to determine if you wish to continue...you can always commit 'part 2' of whatever you're doing for another 21 days.

I would love to hear what you decide to do for the next 21 days. Let me know. And write to me after those 21 days are up to let me know how whatever you chose enhanced your life, taught you something you didn't know about yourself, or simply allowed you to say, 'I committed to something new...and I did it!'

For anyone who has clutter, have no doubt in your mind that CLUTTER GROWS. Small clutter challenges soon turn into large clutter issues.

Plus, clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may have in your closet, the overload of toys in the toy room, the boxes of stuff in the basement, or the stuffed-to-the-max drawers and closets in your home. Clutter can actually invade your life in FOUR forms...

1. Physical Clutter
2. Paper Clutter
3. Digital Clutter
4. Emotional Clutter

Once clutter is here, it begins to wreak all sorts of havoc...

There is only one way to get rid of clutter...and that is by using a proven- effective clutter-removing system. Only then will you be able to face clutter head-on and have the clutter-free life you deserve.

  Take Action

___ 1. Do today's (January 10) Organizing TO DO provided in my January Organizing Checklist. Today's focus is on gifts you received this past holiday. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access it.

___ 2. Give your houseplants some love. Today is 'Houseplant Appreciation Day.' Water your houseplants. Maybe add a little bit of fertilizer or transfer to a larger pot if needed. Dust them off...yes, they get dusty. Some can be 'dusted' by running the leaves under the kitchen faucet. Compressed air can be used for succulents to remove the dust. Sometimes, you can use a feather duster. If you're not sure, search Google for the type of live plant you have and how best to clean it.

___ 3. Say no to the space bandits. Discover the 5 common space bandits that may be taking your space captive, and how to rally today to get that space back! Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access my 5 Common Space Bandits article.
