Ideas for Curing Virtual Burnout

Most of us are spending more time online than in-person these days. Some folks love the convenience of it...never having to leave home, the ability to dress more casually for virtual meet-ups, the fact that they're saving a whole bunch of driving time, and being able to 'be with others' despite travel restrictions.

Some people are experiencing something called virtual burnout. They're online so much, absolutely saturated with technology, that they feel they're not only experiencing more fatigue and stress, but are losing motivation and enthusiasm.

An associate of mine said she feels she has become lazy in the past ten months. When she first started doing virtual meet-ups with work, she was excited by the newness of it all. She woke up early, had her breakfast, got dressed, fixed her hair and makeup, and sat down in plenty of time for the 'meeting host' to invite her into the virtual conference room.

This is no longer the case. When there is a meeting happening these days, she drags herself out of bed a few minutes before the meeting begins, quickly dresses in a pair of old sweats and a t-shirt, ties her hair back in a pony tail, and doesn't even bother with a drop of make-up. She often has breakfast, which she has admitted is a cookie or two in most cases, during the meeting. She said she's so tired of online meetings that it's hard for her to focus, spending most of the meeting time daydreaming.

She used to go to the gym daily. She then started taking virtual classes. Now, she's tired of virtual fitness...and unfortunately, she's barely exercising at all.

She had a recent doctor's appointment...it was an online conference. She also just met with her teenage son's teacher...virtually as well.

She communicates with family, friends, associates, co-workers...all virtually.

Previous to the pandemic, she spent most of her time with others in-person. Now, it's video-conferencing, Facetime, email, social media, and text messaging.

While some people thrive on their new technology-only lives, many others are not doing so well. If you feel you're suffering a bit of virtual burnout, here are some ideas:

1) Hang in there: While it seems like this pandemic is never going to end, focus on the light. The end of this nightmare is slowly coming into focus and we are moving forward.

2) Get outside. Serious. Even if it's cold out. Even if it's snowing or raining. Even if you have to force yourself. Even if it's just for a few moments. Light is a mood-elevator. Natural daylight raises your serotonin (your body's feel- good chemical) levels. You'll get a dose of Vitamin D, promoting a healthier immune system. A breath of fresh air and being in nature can help you destress, focus, and be more mindful. If you take it a step further and exercise just a bit while you're outside, it can raise your energy levels too.

3) Schedule no-tech times. Technology is only constant when we allow it to be. During regularly scheduled times each day...turn off the TV, power down your computer, put your phone into DO NOT DISTURB mode (you can always program in a phone number or two so only absolute emergency calls/texts can get through), turn off social media notifications, and let email and text messages sit for a bit.

4) Get back to basics. You don't have to use an app to make a list, use Pinterest to find a recipe, or order your pizza online. In the past, people actually got along without cell phones, computers, or social media. Depending on your age, you may be thinking, 'What???!!!!!' But it's true. A list can be made with a sheet of paper and a pen. A recipe can be found by leisurely browsing through an old cookbook. You can order your pizza by phone, and actually go pick it up (curbside pickup or in-person.) The car ride may do you a bit of good.

5) Schedule and do non-virtual TO DOs and activities. Throughout your day, every day, fit in non-virtual TO DOs and activities. Some ideas: write a letter (a real letter that you mail via the post office), organize a closet, bake from scratch, go for a walk, read a book (a real one with paper pages), do a crossword puzzle (or put together a jigsaw puzzle), or declutter the medicine cabinet.

There's no doubt about it. We've been living in a virtual world for quite some time now. With all of its benefits, virtual burnout is a huge drawback. For optimum emotional health and well-being, it's important to get past that burnout.

And keep your eyes focused on that light...better days are ahead.

  Take Action

___ 1. Do today's (January 17) Organizing TO DO provided in my January Organizing Checklist. It's absolutely necessary for emergencies. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access it.

___ 2. Corral dog, cat (other pet) toys. If you have a pet, chances are you have a collection of pet toys. Get rid of items that have seen better days (are chewed to bits, are dirty, are gross to touch, etc.) and replenish with a new choice or two. Corral toys for pets in a container (so they're not here, there, and everywhere). Choose a container that can be easily cleaned when needed.

___ 3. VOTE in our current poll. In celebration of Valentine's Day, 'What's your favorite type of chocolate?' Take our poll and let us know. Results will be shared in an upcoming newsletter. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access the poll.

  Inspiration

'Turn off your email; turn off your phone; disconnect from the Internet; figure out a way to set limits so you can concentrate when you need to, and disengage when you need to. Technology is a good servant...but a bad master.'
(Gretchen Rubin)
