  Organizing Thought of the Day

Lost...and Found!

Katie, a friend of mine, called me yesterday to chat and tell me about her recent 'adventure.' She woke up to go to work as usual, went to grab her car keys that are normally in her purse, and couldn't find them anywhere. Knowing they had to be home somewhere (because she drove home the previous night), she began turning over sofa cushions, emptied out the very full trash can and recycling bin, looked in the refrigerator...all before work.

She eventually gave up and took a cab that ended up costing her nearly a hundred dollars...one way. Her husband was able to pick her up, luckily, for her ride home...but that was after he already drove an hour from his own workplace.

When she got home, she tossed her winter coat on a chair and heard a 'clink.' It turns out that she had her keys all along...apparently she mindlessly put them in her coat pocket and they ended up falling through a pocket hole and settling in the lining of her coat. Not exactly a fun adventure!

If you sometimes lose or misplace your keys, purse/wallet, remote control, glasses, or whatever it may be, don't feel bad. You are not alone. In fact, the average person misplaces up to nine items a day. And age doesn't matter. I recently read that Millennials are twice as likely as Boomers to lose their stuff.

If you regularly misplace things, there are many possible reasons. Perhaps you don't have a permanent home for something you own...or maybe you don't take the time to return that item to its home when you're done using it. Maybe you're setting items down mindlessly (it's easy these days because we're overloaded with information, news, TO DOs, etc.) You may spend a lot of time multi- tasking...while we may think we're good multi-taskers, the fact is that the more we're trying to do at once, the more likely we're going to put something down without thinking about where we're putting it...and then have to invest time searching for it later.

While I'm a big believer in addressing the root of the problem (like being more mindful, not constantly multi-tasking, etc.), sometimes all of us can use a litter helper in our lives.

An item locater is one of life's little helpers that pretty much anyone can benefit from using. Here's one that is very reliable and easy to use:

This item finder can help you track four different items, that you regularly misplace, with ease. You just press your transmitter indicating you've lost something, the 'beep' penetrates through walls, doors, cushions, and furniture and leads you right to the item. It saves a whole lot of time and aggravation for you...or anyone you know who is regularly searching for something that was misplaced.

On a related note...I would love to hear your 'Lost and Found' stories...and what you've done since, if applicable, to ensure you don't lose that item again. Please reply back with your story and I'll share those I receive with our readers in an upcoming newsletter.
