  Organizing Thought of the Day

Giving Donations Away Safely

I recently featured an article on my website entitled: Be a Clutter Buster

I've gotten so much response to it from GON readers who are filling bags and boxes with items they no longer need. That is music to my ears!

One of my readers had questions about donations, rummage sales, and passing on clothing to family and friends...and the safety of doing so during a pandemic. I'm glad she wrote.

Many donation centers are currently open, accepting (and in great need of) donations. There are also people in great need of donated items...even during the pandemic, and especially so in some cases. So many folks are out of work and can't afford to buy clothing, food, appliances, etc. at full price.

Of the donation centers and charities currently accepting, many have implemented safe drop off of donations, such as curbside and donation bins. In turn, many are offering safe pick up...some ensure donated items sit (for a length of time) before anyone else touches them. There are thrift stores open for business that are very strict about masks and social distancing...and have implemented many practices like additional cleaning and disinfecting, availability of hand sanitizer, and other safety practices.

Of course, before you get in your car, call your local donation centers and charities. Ask if they are a) open, b) accepting donations, c) taking additional safety steps, and d) requiring YOU to take any additional steps before or during drop-off of your goods.

Realize that some have limited hours and may require you to make an appointment. Of course, your favorite drop-off center may still be closed, and if this is the case, you will have to choose another that is open or stow away your donation bags/boxes, for a bit, in an out-of-the-way spot in your home.

Online auction sites are still going strong if you'd like to sell some of your belongings on eBay or one of those types of services. Virtual, local rummage sale groups on Facebook have been readily available, payments can be made and received digitally, and drop off/pick up can be done with no contact.

If you're not into the whole online rummage sale thing, and prefer in-person sales, you may be able to host one locally, depending on your town's rules. However, it is highly recommended that you have rules in place that meet safety protocols...limiting shoppers, masks, social distancing, hand sanitizer, and such. Alternately, box up items to sell at an in-person garage sale in the future, when it's safe to do so. Hopefully, by summer or fall of 2021, there will be more opportunities for hosting an in-person sale.

Finally, giving items to friends/relatives who can use what you have can be done safely as well. One of the easiest methods is dropping off in a bag or box. The recipient may choose to let the items sit for a number of days before touching...perhaps in a garage...if they so choose. No contact methods are highly recommended for the time being. Anything donated and received should be washed thoroughly (hottest temperature safe for clothing), disinfected, etc.

I hope this gives everyone some ideas of what to do with those bags and boxes of items to be donated, sold, or given away. Happy decluttering!

___ 1. Do today's (January 16) Organizing TO DO provided in my January Organizing Checklist. It's focused on your budget. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access it.

___ 2. Inventory and inspect table linens, cloth napkins, and napkin rings. It's a great time to go through items you use when you set your kitchen and/or dining room tables. Donate any that are no longer useful for your family or when you have company. This would include those that don't match your dinnerware, your taste, or the size/design of your tables. Trash any that have rips or stains.

___ 3. Check out the results of our latest web poll. GON readers responded to, `What type of calendar do you use...paper, digital, or both?' Here are the results of that poll visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access the article.
