Organizing Thought of the Day

Benefits of Writing by Hand Versus Typing into a Device
Even though I'm a fan of technology, I'm a huge believer and proponent of paper,
pen, and writing by hand.
Certainly, typing something that you want to remember into a device is better
than not recording it at all. After all, as long as your notes are 'somewhere'
and you know 'where that somewhere is', it's a pretty safe bet you'll be able to
access that information when needed...as long as the device is charged and a
source of electrical power is available when needed.
However, writing something by hand, using pen and paper, has benefits we don't
always consider. Research has proven, time and again, that the act of physically
jotting notes, thoughts, and ideas onto a sheet of paper, or into a notebook,
vastly increases the chances we'll remember whatever we're writing.
This is especially helpful for students who can't reference notes during a test
and have to rely on their memories.
Adults who write by hand are helping to keep their brains clear and sharp as
well. This is one reason crossword puzzles are recommended as an excellent brain
activity.
When we write something on paper, we're automatically making it more concrete
and tangible...and we can use the written word as a building block for something
we want to remember or do. Sometimes, we type something into our computers or
cell phones...and then, POOF!, 'out of sight, out of mind.'
When I'm writing my list of ideas for the week (and I always do this) in my
journal, those thoughts are front and center, on my desk. I look at it every
single day. I write ideas in it every single day. I act on those ideas every
single day. It's not somewhere on my computer or in 'the Cloud.' It's constantly
in front of me...reminding me (and motivating me) to keep up with it.
And because I wrote those ideas down by hand, my mind automatically remembers
them throughout the day...so something I wrote is most often 'top of mind.'
The act of writing also allows us to slow down and be more mindful. It provides
the opportunity to take our minds off other worries. It's very challenging for
the brain to process two thoughts at the same time. If you're writing up a
gratitude list, for example, it's tough to worry about the fact that you're
going to need a new washing machine soon or how your daughter is going to fare
when she takes her driving test. It can provide a much-needed mental break,
giving our brains an opportunity to release our worries and relax a bit.
I have my recurring daily, weekly, and monthly TO DOs all typed out in a
Word file...and I actually print these pages out at the beginning of each
month. Each item has a checkbox, and as I complete those TO DOs, I check them
off by hand. I find doing so very satisfying. Plus, the list is always in
front of me. I don't have to turn on my computer or spend more time on my
phone to access it.
Finally, there just something special about writing something by hand.
Journaling by hand is a lovely daily routine that can help us keep calm,
grounded, and thoughtful. Writing a handwritten thank you letter means your
recipient will be receiving something you touched...the person may even
save it in their memory box.
Certainly use technology. Like I said, I use it all the time. But, don't
discount a blank sheet of paper, a lovely pen, and the act of writing by
hand.
