  Organizing Thought of the Day

If something is trash...

Having helped so many people get organized throughout the years, when helping them declutter, I nearly always came across obvious trash in the process. An example of this is a store tag that was cut off a shirt weeks ago, sitting on top of a dresser. Another is a pair of shoes with a hole or that were chewed by a pet, sitting in a closet. Yet another example is a gum wrapper. The gum was chewed days ago, but the wrapper (for some reason) remains on a desk or kitchen table. A big one is a ball of lint, removed from the dryer, but kept on top of the dryer for days on end.

There are a few reasons for this:

a) There is no trash or recycling container nearby. It seems easier to just place it somewhere for now. (Solution: Add a trash or recycling container to that room (a small one is fine for most bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms, etc.) so the trash can be placed into it, instead of on a surface or the floor. Empty that container out regularly.)

b) There is no time to walk to the trash or recycling container...the person who left the junk is in a super-rush to get to work, school, etc. (Solution: If you're always in a rush, focus on improving time management, like waking up earlier, padding your time, preparing for the morning rush the night before, etc.)

c) It was placed there because it was quick to do so, with the intention that it will be tossed out later...but then it's forgotten about. (Solution: It's just as quick to throw it out as it is to place it down IF there is a wastebasket in that room. Add a wastebasket if you find yourself placing trash down and forgetting about it.)

d) It is expected that someone else will throw it away (Solution: This happens often with children...the child doesn't throw it out because mom or dad will toss it out. As a parent, this may be helping the child at the moment, but doesn't help the child in the long run. Get your kids to throw out their own trash, and they'll be more apt to do so as adults. If an adult is leaving trash for someone else (like a spouse), a heartfelt talk may be in order.)

e) The person leaving the trash is kind of lazy or sloppy. (Solution: This person may need a bit of direction, incentive, encouragement, or motivation. Visit (if this person is you), or have them visit (if this person is someone else), my web site and Facebook page...regularly...if willing to do so. I'm willing to provide information/motivation...and many of our GON readers are too.)

If something is trash, I always highly recommend it is put into the trash right away. One piece of trash often turns into two, three, or more pieces. Plus, if someone else living at home sees that there is trash laying around, it sends the message that it's 'OK' to leave other trash laying around as well.

Taking care of trash immediately is just one of the ways you can keep your home looking clean and organized.

___ 2. Learn how to clean a room, easily and effectively, top to bottom. My brand new, comprehensive article on this very subject was just published. You'll learn my step-by-step method, as well as room-by-room suggestions. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access it.

___ 3. Take care of your tootsies. Are you keeping your feet healthy? Make sure your shoes fit properly. They should not be hurting your feet. Keep your toenails trimmed...straight across with a nail clipper and the corners smoothed with an emory board. Keep them clean, moisturize daily, check them each day for any issues, and see a podiatrist if you have any concerns.
