  Organizing Thought of the Day

5 Items Helpful to Have on Hand When Decluttering

When I have a decluttering project coming up, I like to be prepared ahead of time. I find these helpful when decluttering:

1) Bags/boxes to corral the items. When I'm decluttering something 'physical' (rather than digital, etc.), I always have a few bags or boxes on hand to 'catch' my cast-a-ways. One is marked DONATE...and this is generally the one that ends up being the most full when I'm done. Another is marked TRASH. A third is marked PASS ON (these items are passed to family, friends, etc.). A fourth is marked SELL (in case I want to sell any items.)

2) Notebook and pen. Every now and then, I like to take notes (like 'don't forget to tell Amy about the missing button' etc.). Having these on hand ensures I can jot down my thought without any project interruption.

3) Sticky notes, scotch tape, and safety pins. Sometimes I want to make a note ON one of the items I'm passing on. I jot the information I want to communicate on a sticky note, and then tape or safety pin (for fabric) that sticky note onto the item. Sticky notes are sticky...but they have a tendency to fall off when placed in a bag...thus the tape or pin.

4) My cell phone. Don't get me wrong. When I'm doing an organizing project, or any project for that matter, my phone goes into 'do not disturb mode' so I'm not distracted with calls, messages, or notifications. However, sometimes I want to take a photo of something before it gets placed into one of the bags/boxes, especially if I'm planning on selling the item. The cell phone comes in handy for that!

5) Hand-vac, multi-purpose cleaner, and paper towels. When I'm decluttering, I almost always empty the shelf, drawer, etc. that I'm focusing on. When I do, I can be rest-assured there is going to be a bit of cleaning needed to remove any dust/debris. Having the cleaning products on hand allows me to quickly clean this area.
