  Organizing Thought of the Day

Make Decluttering Successful Right from the Start

Whenever I'm helping someone declutter, I do what I can to make the project begin successfully. Decluttering the largest items first makes a big difference.

One of my organizing clients wanted to declutter her small bedroom. When I arrived, we really couldn't even walk into the room...there was so much on the floor...clothes, books, bedding, coats, toys, etc. The first thing we did was identify the largest item in the room...and that was a spare mattress she had that was on the floor near her bed.

My client bought it inexpensively from a neighbor who had an extra, thinking she would replace the older one she had with this newly acquired one. Well, once it was in my client's home, she realized it wasn't in good condition at all (it's usually not a great idea to accept a used mattress, by the way), so it was laying in her bedroom among everything else.

That's the first item that went. We picked it up, dragged it out of the bedroom, and leaned it against the living room wall. (She then called the sanitation department and made a pick-up appointment...and she got someone to help her bring it to the curb.)

Removing that large item made a huge difference. We could now walk into the room without having to move or climb over anything.

We then chose two, very large, fluffy, bedding sets she had...comforters, sheets, and pillowcases. We bagged them up, and put them in my client's car for drop off at a local donation center.

Third, we noticed how many books were catching dust and taking up space. One book is tiny, but I knew two boxes of books packed up would also make a big difference. So, we grabbed two empty boxes, she placed all the books she no longer needed in the boxes, and she put them in her car as well. They would be driven to her local library that accepts used books.

At that point, we noticed a huge difference, just by saying goodbye to that extra mattress, the bedding sets, and those two boxes of books. It was a successful start that motivated my client to keep decluttering.

In summary, identify the items you can declutter...the largest ones. Those will make a big impact, open up empty surface space that will allow you to sort the rest, and give you a sense of accomplishment right from the start.
