  Organizing Thought of the Day

Being Busy is Not Necessarily Being Productive

For most of us, there are unlimited tasks and projects we can be working on in any given day. So, it's easy to be busy. But being busy is not necessarily being productive.

We can be busy picking up and moving stuff from one side of the room to the other, and back again...without really decluttering anything.

We can be busy shuffling papers at work, without any projects getting completed.

We can be busy driving around town running errands, and not even give a second thought as to how we could save time or money otherwise.

We can be very busy working on something without ever questioning whether it's worth doing in the first place.

Have you heard the old story about the woodsman? He works every day chopping down trees. As each day passes, his ax becomes more blunt...and he has to work harder and harder each day. Then, someone asks him why he hasn't taken the time to sharpen his ax, and the woodcutter replies that he's 'too busy' to do so. After all, he has to chop down more trees.

Think about this. The point is not to work harder. 'Sharpening your ax,' so to speak, would save time and effort in the long run. It would reduce the work, and increase the productivity.

Be careful about just being busy. When you think of 'being busy,' equate that to 'working harder.' When you think of 'being productive' equate that to 'working smarter.' There's a big difference.

Whenever you catch yourself 'being busy,' ask yourself what steps you can take to adjust, tweak, revamp, and/or eliminate so you can 'be more productive.' In doing so, you'll be able to achieve more of the important stuff, in less time and with less effort.
