  Organizing Thought of the Day

Organizing Makes a Room More Cozy

When I'm home, I love being cozy. You probably do too. Sitting near the fireplace, wearing fuzzy socks, sipping a cup of herbal tea, a soft blanket, a comfortable pillow, a bowl of piping hot soup...all of these remind me of 'coziness.' It has been proven, by the way, that embracing coziness can increase overall happiness.

Something not-so-cozy is being in a cluttered, chaotic room. So, to help ensure you enjoy that warm, cozy feeling when you're home, there are some immediate clutter-fixes:

1) Clear the coffee table and end tables. Remotes and game controllers can be tucked away in a nice box. Magazines can be stored in a magazine rack... or switch to a digital subscription. Sort mail over the recycling bin and put it where it belongs...bills in a bills-to-be-paid tray, papers to be filed in the filing cabinet, etc.

2) Corral loose items. When you think of cozy, you're likely thinking of your living or family room and your bedroom. Corral extra blankets and pillows in a pretty basket...don't just throw the blankets in. Fold them nicely. A small basket or decorative box can hold all of your TV remotes and/or game controllers. I have a decorative box with a lid that holds all of our cords, chargers, and game remotes...out of sight. The bonus to this is you'll be able to find them when you need them. Can you corral all of your pet toys? There is a wooden box on my fireplace step that holds all of our pet bunny's favorite items.

3) Keep things tidy. Do a 10-minute pick up each night...placing items in their respective homes. Don't wait too long to dust or vacuum. Dusty surfaces are not cozy. Carpeting and furniture piled with pet hair isn't cozy either. Don't let this household chore go more than a week...and you may need to keep a lint roller around if you have a shedding pet. No dead plants. Really. If a plant has seen better days, put it to rest. No empty soda cans, gum wrappers, or crumbs. You get the idea. A clean room lends itself to cozier, happier feelings.
