  Organizing Thought of the Day

Six More Weeks of Winter or Early Spring?

Today, February 2nd, is Groundhog Day...the day when we give a 'hooray' or 'boo' to the weather-forecasting predictions of one of the many famous groundhogs.

Some famous groundhogs include, but are not limited to, Punxsutawney Phil, Staten Island Chuck, Jimmy the Groundhog, Buckeye Chuck, General Beauregard Lee, Chattanooga Chuck, Dunkirk Dave, and Thistle the Whistlepig.

Being an east coast native, as well as a traditionalist, Punxsutawney Phil is the groundhog I have followed for years...and continue to follow even though I currently live in the midwest. And by 'follow,' I basically mean that I typically know, at some point on February 2nd, whether the groundhog saw its shadow or not. That's about the extent of it.

Of course, it's not like Phil is that reliable. Last I checked, he is only accurate 39% of the time. Yet, today this little rodent will, once again like he has for many years, be stirred out of his hole to predict the weather. If he sees his shadow, it's supposed to indicate six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't, it's supposed to indicate an early spring.

There has been recent talk (and petitions) about not taking advantage of a real live groundhog for this event, and using a robotic groundhog instead. Those advocating for this said that doing so would put less stress on the animal and probably give us a more accurate forecast.

Who knows what will become of that. Only time will tell.

By the way, groundhogs build underground burrows with a section for each purpose, one for hibernating, another for caring for their young, a bathroom, etc. So, just like us humans, they've also sorted their homes into several 'rooms.' So, in honor of groundhogs and organizing today, when you see something in one room that belongs in another, transport it to its appropriate place.

Happy Groundhog Day. May the prediction your favorite groundhog chooses be the one you wish it to be! Personally, I am hoping for an early spring!
