My Husband Leaves Stuff Everywhere
A GON reader recently asked...
Hi Maria,
I have been reading your site for a few years now and love it! I used to read it
first thing every morning. Now I use it as a reward for work and chores
accomplished.
I was considered to be a very organized person by all my friends. However, I am
married and my husband likes to leaves stuff all around the house. He is very
bright and does many chores that save us money. But clutter does not seem to
bother him. It really has been bothering me. Do you have any advice to help me
cope, rather than constantly nag?
By the way, I like the new format of the site. It's neat, concise and I can
select one to read, and then resume a project before going on to read a second
section.
Thank you for all your helpful suggestions. I have incorporated many into our
lives.
Best regards,
Linda
Here is my response...
Hi Linda,
Thanks so much for your note and for being a loyal reader. I love your method
for how and when you read my web site...wonderful...and I'm so glad you like
the format!
Regarding your husband, you said, 'Clutter does not seem to bother him.' And
you're most likely 100% correct. We all have different thresholds when it
comes to clutter.
It is possible that your husband may not actually 'see' the clutter that is
right there in front of him. What you clearly see...may not even exist to him.
Try having a heart-to-heart with your husband. Tell him how much you love and
appreciate him and everything he does. Let him know that you don't want to nag.
Explain that it's unsettling to you when the house is out of order, or dishes
are left in the sink...whatever the case may be.
Ask him to work with you to come up with a solution. Find out if there is
something you can do to help...such as adding a laundry basket somewhere or
hanging some hooks, etc. Make it as easy as possible for him to put his
stuff away.
Ask your husband if he would find it beneficial to have a 'honey-do list' that
he can check off, like...
_____ File papers away that are on the home office desk
_____ Put any tools left astray in toolbox
_____ Place books back on book shelf
This would identify the areas for him that he may not even be noticing, and help
him zone in on the tasks.
Designate three areas in your home as drop-off zones, with baskets. Tell your
husband that you understand if he doesn't have time to walk upstairs,
downstairs, etc., but that you've placed baskets in these three areas for
temporary drop-off. At least, in that case, the clutter would be contained and
he won't feel forced to stop everything he is doing to put that item back in its
home.
He may be open to 'reminder alarms' being set on his phone to check the honey do
list, or check if the basket is full.
You may also set the hour prior to dinner as 'family pick up' time when you
both work together to tidy up.
In the meantime, enjoy each other, have fun together, talk, go for walks, and
laugh. Getting and staying organized is a journey...sometimes an individual
one, and sometimes with others. Remember: one day at a time.

Something Special For You
|
Get Your Free Pass
to the Heart Brain Online Event
February is heart health month, and I have something very special for you.
Most people don't know this, but the heart sends more signals to the brain than
the brain sends to the heart. Those heart signals contain a wide range of
information that affect how the brain thinks and perceives.
These heart signals have a significant effect on brain function and improve
positive emotions, attention, perception, memory, problem-solving, and
intuition. It also greatly reduces insecurity and stress, which are huge
obstacles to success.
When the heart and brain are in sync, your intelligence expands and you gain
access to more intuitive downloads and meaningful insights.
Heart health is not only physical, but also emotional. During the Heart Brain
Fest, you will learn all about syncing your heart and brain
for your health and well-being.
