4 Strategies to Get Others to Pitch In

Getting and staying organized can sometimes be a bit challenging when you're trying to accomplish it with others. Everyone has their own idea what being organized looks like to them. Everyone has a different tolerance level with both clutter and cleanliness. Still, there are strategies you can use to get everyone to pitch in without too much stress among family members:

1. Be sure everyone knows WHAT has to be done. Nobody should have to guess what tasks have to be handled. This is where a 'Chore Chart' comes in handy. Post one on the fridge, listing the tasks.

2. Break tradition. Tradition has dictated that some chores are for women/girls (dusting, ironing, folding laundry) and some chores are for men/boys (washing the car, mowing the lawn, brushing the dog). But just because it's tradition, doesn't mean it has to be that way of life for your family. In fact, it can serve everyone well if each person can do pretty much whatever needs to be done, no matter what the task/chore is.

3. Alternate, swap, or draw tasks.

Alternate: There's always at least one dreaded job. Alternate it among family members. This way, everyone gets a break at least part of the time.

Allow swaps: If someone wants to swap a job with someone else, and the other person is willing, allow it to happen.

Draw: Write all the chores on index cards and toss them in a basket. Each person chooses one or two every day and handles those tasks. (Put the 'DONE' tasks in another basket or envelope...and when the basket is empty, fill it back up.)

4. Accept 'less than perfect.' When another family member pitches in, compliment those efforts, even if the job is less than you deem to be perfect. Be careful about expecting perfection (in your mind) because you'll either end up nagging other family members or doing EVERYTHING yourself.
