Organizing Tools and Tool Boxes in Your Home

GON READER QUESTION

Hi Maria,

We have three tool boxes (two we inherited) filled with all kinds tools, screws, etc. What is the easiest way to consolidate into one? Thanks.

Jane Sullivan,

MARIA GRACIA RESPONDS

Hi Jane,

Great question! First, depending on your house and your storage situation, you may consider keeping one well-stocked toolbox AND another 'simple' toolbox on each floor. We keep our main, well-stocked toolbox in the basement. Plus, we keep a smaller one on our main floor (we live in a ranch) that includes:

* hammer
* Phillips head screwdriver
* flat-head screwdriver
* set of tiny screwdrivers for eyeglasses, etc.
* tape measure
* pliers
* wrench
* wire cutter
* utility knife
* a few different sizes of Command Strips
* scissor
* flashlight
* small set of assorted nails and screws for quick-fixes

When we need a tool for a simple task, it's more convenient to not have to go down to the basement each time.

If you determine you only want one toolbox total, then keep the largest toolbox you have. I would spread all of the tools out on a surface (tools can scratch surfaces...be sure to lay down newspaper or a tablecloth), sort them, and keep the best quality of each type. Duplicates can be donated.

I would, at least, be sure to have all of the tools listed above, but there are certainly many more tools (hand saw, sandpaper, clamps, Allen keys, caulking gun, etc.) that you can include. This really depends on whether your family handles most home needs yourselves or if you hire out.

As far as screws, nails, and other small, loose items, definitely keep an assortment in your main toolbox. You may have built-in compartments, or you can use any container, preferably plastic and see-through, to keep these sorted and visible in your toolbox. If you have an ample amount of these small items, you can use mason jars, coffee cans, etc. stored outside of your toolbox on a shelf or attached to a wall. But again, only keep these if they're likely to be used. A jar of screws sitting on a shelf in a basement for years gathering dust is unnecessary.

I wanted to mention too that some folks use pegboard to hang tools on their wall in place of, or in addition to, those in their home toolbox. This allows for at-a-glance visibility when a tool is needed.

Hope this helps get some ideas churning.
