Have you ever had 'one of those days'? You know...the ones that seem like
everything is going wrong? This was one of my days a few weeks ago.
1) It began in the morning when my 17-year old daughter, Amanda, got her car
nice and stuck in snow coming out of our home's driveway. (You know...the snow
pile that the city plows leave behind at the edge of driveways. Not their fault.
I like that our streets are plowed.) Anyway, Joe and I had fun shoveling her out
at 6AM.
2) I teach fitness classes in the morning, and that day, my entire Zumba
playlist decided to vanish into thin air 5 minutes before class. I had to
'remember' and 'search' for each song. They're all Spanish names. I barely speak
Spanish. Ugh...technology.
3) Later that evening, the washing machine decided to start making really loud
noises...and also decided not to spin our clothes...and pretty much decided to
die, or was at least seriously injured. So, Joe and I bonded in the kitchen
while wringing out super wet, cold clothes.
Honestly, Joe and I were laughing because, really, it was like an episode of
Candid Camera. I was waiting for Allen Funt's spirit to appear.
Oh well...some days are just like that. Nothing 'really bad' happened. But each
incident was kind of annoying. That being said, if we strive to take a deep
breath, learn from everything (good and not-so-good) that occurs, and seek out
the positive, it's a lot easier to simply 'call it a day' and start fresh
tomorrow.
We actually got to use something that helped us with our daughter's stuck car.
Joe bought traction mats awhile ago...and
they have been patiently awaiting our need for them. After shoveling around the
front tires and even a bit under the front end of Amanda's vehicle...her car is
sporty and sits very low...we turned the steering wheel to completely straighten
the tires, tucked the traction mats behind both of the front wheels (you place
them in the direction that the car will be moving in), put the car in reverse,
and pulled straight back. The tires immediately gripped onto the traction mats
and she was soon on her way to school. We now have a set in each car and we all
know exactly how to use them.
My playlist? I created a back-up playlist in another program, just in case that
ever happens again. I also printed up a paper playlist of my songs that
included the song title and artist. Worse comes to worse in the future, I'll
at least have the names of the songs and class won't be so discombobulated.
The washing machine. I called our handyman, Craig, the day after and Craig was
'up north' (I live in Wisconsin...somebody is always taking a break 'up north')
and unavailable for a few days. So, we had to decide whether to wait or call
someone else. We like Craig and he has helped us many times...so we decided to
wait. Our local laundromat is only a 5-minute drive away (and includes a
wonderful sit-down coffee shop...bonus!) so while we were waiting for the
machine repair, I used the commercial washers and dryers, and had the
opportunity to have a cup of coffee and read my book several times that week.
Everything worked out. Even though I had one of those 'things happen in threes'
days, that's just life sometimes. Every day since then has been 'more normal'
and uneventful. Maybe, just maybe, these hiccups happen for a reason. When they
do, there's sometimes an opportunity for improvement...or at least a reminder to
appreciate the days when all goes smoothly.
Plus, it almost always ends up in an interesting story to share with someone
else. If you have a story along these lines, I'd love to hear it...it just may
end up being published in one of my future newsletters.
P.S. We've been making some tweaks to my newsletter format because some
subscribers are having issues with text creeping behind photos. If you're one of
the subscribers who has been having these issues, would you please REPLY and let
me know if those same issues are still present in today's newsletter? Thank you!
