Organizing Thought of the Day
|
Get Things Done. Slow Down and Rest.
While I'm obviously a huge proponent of productivity and getting things done, I
also know how important it is to find relaxing things to do each day. One of my
favorite activities is reading a good book...and I do my best to fit in at least
15-20 minutes doing so each day.
I belong to a monthly book chat. Last month, we read
The Alice Network: A Novel
by Kate Quinn. It was definitely a good one and I highly recommend it. It
seesaws back and forth between 1915 (detailing the story of a woman who
is recruited to work as a spy during the Great War) and 1947 (where that same
spy ends up years later...as well as her meet up with an American college
girl seeking her missing cousin.)
Right now, for book chat, I'm reading
My Sister: The Serial Killer: A Novel
by Oyinkan Braithwaite. I'll let you know what I think of that when I'm done.
Sometimes people forego their relaxation time because they have a challenging
time sitting when 'something' could be getting done. Trust me, I get it. I have
that 'keep going, going, going' personality. However, I also know that staying
on this non-stop track constantly is not good for either physical or mental
well-being. So, I reign myself in and force myself to slow down and rest,
several times a day. Doing so ensures I'm getting things done...and taking
time in between to relax and refresh my internal batteries.
Speaking of books, I also wanted to include a GON reader letter about some
books she enjoyed, as well as how she organizes her reading. She has some
great ideas related to both reading and organizing that I wanted to share.
I'm so glad she submitted this note. Here goes...
Hi Maria,
Here are some of my favorite books:
Something Like Happy by Eva Woods
I Love Everybody by Laurie Notaro
Bridget Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding
At the age of two, I was reading independently, and books have been a
big part of my life ever since. These days, with kids, husband and a demanding
full-time job, I can only read a few pages while blow-drying my hair each
morning and during my lunch breaks...and it's vital to my well-being to fit it
any reading I can.
I organize my lists of books I want to read and those I've read, all organized
by subject, on GoodReads. I keep my profile private, but people can network,
based on reading interests. Users create virtual shelves (lists), which could
include, 'Self-Help,' 'Vegan Cooking,' 'Mysteries,' etc. I also created a
'Library-Next' list to keep those of the most interest. Each title is identified
as either 'Want to Read,' 'Currently Reading,' or 'Read.' Readers can review
those they've read. The best feature is that a reader can view several
categories at once. When I'm at the library or bookstore, it's easy to pull up
my list of 'Library - Next' for each family member's 'Want to Read' shelf - and
I can filter by additional categories. This is extremely helpful since these
lists can become enormous.
With one click, you can access a a list of all titles published by a preferred
author, or all of the titles published in a series. Also, while viewing a book
I've read and rated highly, I can instantly view additional titles that were
categorized/rated as similar to this book, so I'm introduced to potential
future favorites very easily.
As many have reported, I too enjoy your daily and weekly emails. Your tips have
made a huge difference in my life over the years...and I look forward to reading
the inspirational quotes at the closing of each message.

Thanks to R.S. for these book recommendations and wonderful tips!
Whether you enjoy reading, or something else, be sure each day includes at least
a little bit of a relaxing activity. It's amazing how much doing so can make
a difference in positive, balanced daily living!
