  Organizing Thought of the Day

Your TO DO List Should Not Upset You

The process of making lists is crucial to effective organization. If it's not written down, it's bound to be forgotten.

But, so many people get frustrated and overwhelmed when they look at all the tasks on their lists. They wonder how they'll ever be able to accomplish so many things.

This is sad...because the purpose of making a list should not be to upset you. It should be to 'free you.' If it's on the list, you don't have to keep it in your brain.

This is why it's very important to focus on just a few items. Here's the process again. I'm mentioning it again because repetitive reminders are so important.

1. Keep ALL the tasks you have to do on your Master List.

2. Transfer no more than 4 to your TO DO list.

3. Focus on the first item, get it done and celebrate.

4. Focus on the second item, get it done and celebrate.

5. Focus on the third item, get it done and celebrate.

6. Focus on the fourth item, get it done and celebrate.

7. Transfer 4 more tasks over from your Master List to your TO DO list.

I cannot emphasize enough how effective this system is when consistently applied.

Today, I want to mention one important point about all this, and that is, BEFORE transferring items from your Master List to your TO DO list, determine if those tasks are important enough to do in the first place.

Ask yourself if it's really important to you to drive all the way over to another supermarket, just to save 35 cents on bread. That 35 cents is surely going to be spent on fuel anyway, and look at the time that is being wasted.

Or, is it a good use of your time to cut out and file magazine articles? For some people who reference their saved articles regularly, it certainly may be a good use of time. But I know MANY people who just cut out articles, file them, and NEVER go into those files again.

In summary, a) LOVE your lists. They're meant to help you. b) We only get 24 hours each day. Think wisely before using them up, because once they're gone, they can never be retrieved again.

  Take Action

___ 1. Find today's task on my March Monthly Organizing Checklist! The March 6 TO DO will help you help your kids and/or grandkids get on track. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access my March Monthly Organizing Checklist.

___ 2. Empty one book shelf and clean it. I have a 5-shelf bookcase at home in my office/guest room. I usually just dust it with the feather duster, because let's face it, who wants to remove all the books from it all the time? Not me. But, I do perform a more thorough dusting now and then. Today, choose a book shelf and remove EVERYTHING from it. Place any books, display items, etc. that you no longer want in a donation box. Dust the shelf off well, and feather dust each book. Return books and display items to the shelf. Repeat this process with the other shelves...one a day...until you're done.

___ 3. Use these tricks to help you remember. Having trouble remembering what you have to do? Here are 10 ideas to sharpen your mind and memory. Visit: GetOrganizedNow.com to access this article.
