  Organizing Thought of the Day

7 Simple, Organized Eating Habits

When most folks think of organizing, they think of clutter, storage, maybe even time management. But organizing affects nearly every aspect of our lives, including eating...and even more specifically healthy eating. If you want to eat healthy, being organized is a very important component of that goal.

Organized eating means you have healthy food options in your home. If nutritious food isn't readily available, without you having to get in your car and drive to the supermarket daily, it's then very easy to opt for fast food or convenience foods.

Organized eating means you have a organized schedule. You scheduled time to go grocery shopping. You scheduled time to plan your meals and gather your recipes. You scheduled time to prep your meals. You scheduled time to defrost, so those foods are ready to use when you are.

Organized eating means you have a plan of what you're going to eat. So, rather than wondering what you're going to make for dinner...10 minutes before dinnertime...you know well ahead of time.

Organized eating means you're knowledgeable about what foods to eat (lean proteins, wholesome vegetables and fruit, whole grains, etc.) so that you and your family are eating in a healthy manner.

Organized eating means that you have little to no food waste. Your family eats what you (or your better half) make...either in that meal or in leftovers... without anything getting thrown in the trash or ground up in the garbage disposal.

Organized eating also means you know where you're going to eat when you're eating out to provide you with plenty of healthy options to choose from.

Now, I'm not saying that I eat super-healthy every single meal. But I try to eat as healthy as possible most meals...because doing what I can to be healthy is important to me. It affects my energy levels, my productivity, my enthusiasm, and my physical and mental health. I also want to do whatever I can do to be here on earth for my family as long as possible.

Here are 7 simple organized eating habits:

1. Make a meal plan. I generally plan for five days. The foods that will spoil the quickest are made in the first few days of that 5-day plan.

2. Whether you go in person or shop online, schedule a day or two each week when you grocery shop and stick to it.

3. Always keep healthy staples in your pantry...beans, canned tomatoes, brown rice, quinoa, tuna and such.

4. Check to see what you're eating tomorrow, the day before. This way, if something needs to be defrosted, you'll have the opportunity to do so.

5. Plan to eat leftovers the next day, or no more than two days away from the day the original meal was made, to ensure it doesn't spoil. The only exception to this is if you choose to freeze what's not eaten...and then it could be enjoyed a week or two later.

6. Use tools that speed up cooking OR that allow you to cook without you having to be there. For instance, Air Fryers allow you to cook faster and with less oil...slow cookers allow you to put everything in the crock and it cooks with little effort and minimal hands-on time.

7. Keep track of where you eat out, and what options are healthy choices. I use an app on my phone to keep track...and refer to it while I'm out. I can then reference restaurant names, meals I liked (and meals I didn't like), and any other helpful notes.

Happy, healthy, organized eating!
