  Organizing Thought of the Day

Comparing Yourself to Others...Good and Bad

The other day, a friend said to me, 'I wish I was more like my sister. She is so put together, organized, outgoing, and successful.' While this friend is a bit more of an introvert than her sibling, I've never thought of her as 'not' put together, disorganized, or unsuccessful. She's always dressed nicely, has never been late for an appointment and has a nice home, and has a very good job that pays well. Clearly, this was more of an inward, personal perception of herself, rather than an outward one to others.

So, I was curious and asked, 'From my standpoint, you're a pretty amazing person. Why do you suppose you feel this way?'

Her reply was, 'I guess I'm always comparing myself to my sister. I have been doing so since I was young. Maybe because I've always felt that things come easier to her.'

There is truth to that statement. Some things do come easier for some than others. That's what makes us all unique. We're all on our own personal journeys in life...each with our own unique qualities and talents. Comparing ourselves to another person is like comparing apples and oranges. We're all good at some things...and not great at other things. There is no perfect person.

Have you ever heard Theodore Roosevelt's words of wisdom on this very topic? He said, 'Comparison is the thief of joy.' You've also probably heard, time and time again, to stop comparing yourself to others.

It's one thing, when you see a quality you'd like to aspire to, to 'look up' to someone else. Use this person as your model of areas you'd like to improve in your life. That's when 'comparing' yourself to someone else can result in something good.

It's a completely different thing when you notice a quality in someone and then feel bad that you don't have that same quality. Using this person as a reason to feel inferior about yourself never results in anything good.

If, at any time, you feel yourself comparing yourself to another human being and feeling bad, reframe your mind.

1) Shift the focus off the other person and to yourself. List your strong points on paper. Read them every day to begin feeling empowered.

2) Take an action. If you're not feeling organized today, do something that IS organized. Donate a small bag of clutter. Put a stray item away. Make your bed. Do something that makes you more organized right now. If you feel like you're not 'put together,' take an action that makes you feel put together. Get a haircut, wear some lipstick, or trade in an old pair of jeans for a nice new pair. No action is too small.

3) Celebrate others and celebrate you. While you may feel your sister (or whoever) has 'everything' together, remind yourself that every person is fighting his or her own battles that you may not be aware of. It's very important to celebrate the wonderful qualities of others...and to celebrate our own wonderful qualities as well.
