  Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria: Packing Belongings After a Tragic Loss

A GON Reader Asked:

My friend's only child committed suicide. It has been 27 months. They were best friends. She has such a hard time with trying to pack up his memorabilia, his clothes, awards, artwork, etc. Any suggestions? I think she is getting ready to. She is talking about it.

Maria Gracia Responded:

How absolutely heartbreaking. I'm so very sorry to hear of your friend's loss of her son. When there is a traumatic loss like this, sorting through that person's belongings is incredibly challenging. Your friend is likely going to need a strong support system as she begins this process.

Being that you're asking, I can tell that you're a friend who can provide love and support. That's wonderful, because not everyone has that.

Is your friend married? If so, there's going to need to be discussion beween her and her spouse to ensure they're both on the same page.

If it's just her, having a family member or friend to help may provide her with both the support and comfort she needs during this process.

Some people like to schedule one or two days and get this done quickly. Others can only handle putting one or two things away at a time. Yet others find that somewhere in the middle of these two scenarios works best...a little bit each week or 20 minutes at a time. A conversation with your friend will, hopefully, help her think through how she wants to proceed.

Also, be aware that what she thinks may work for her may turn out to be just the opposite. It's important for her to have patience with herself.

Once the process begins, it's best if she handles items that are the least sentimental first. Perhaps begin with clothing. It's likely that most of it can be donated and that would be a good first step because it would show some immediate project progress. It may also be comforting to her that her son's possessions are helping other families in need.

If her son had a collection, maybe someone else in the family may wish to have it. If not, there's likely someone somewhere who does. It may be worth offering these items to someone she knows who may want them. In some cases, selling to a stranger may be less emotional for her.

For anything she doesn't want to donate, she can just box up and stow away. Sometimes people aren't willing to give up anything, but can have some closure just by stowing items somewhere that's not so visible on a daily basis.

She may wish to box up and save awards, artwork, and other personal items. Perhaps she can designate two large boxes for this purpose...discarding anything that's not sentimental. She may or may not find this process healing.

What's most important is that she knows that letting go of her son's possessions doesn't signify letting go of her son. Her son will always be there in her heart and memories.

Many hugs and prayers. Please keep me posted as to how she's doing and blessings to you for being a good friend to her.
